Our New York imprint was "printed from plates cast from the same type forms" as the Chicago edition Wessen. It touches the major events of Lincoln's life and career devoid of some of the more romantic mythology e.g. Ms. Rutledge but including the far-fetched notion that Lincoln deliberately lost the 1858 Senatorial race in order to enhance his presidential prospects. <br/> Howes calls it the "most authentic of Lincoln campaign biographies." Lincoln's short-lived career in Congress is reviewed including his opposition to the Mexican War and his support of the Wilmot Proviso. Scripps reports on the life of Abraham Lincoln in eight chapters touching on the major events of his life and career beginning with his early life and his move to Illinois through his transition from merchant to lawyer and legislator and covering his time in Congress with accounts of Lincoln's opposition to the Mexican-American War his support of the Wilmot Proviso and his involvement with the organization of the Republican Party. <br /> <br /> Wessen states that this edition was printed by Horace Greeley "from plates cast from the same type forms" as the 1860 Chicago edition which is considered the first published biography of Lincoln. This scarce 1883 copy was owned by American journalist writer and diplomat Edwin Lefevre. Inscription by Lefevre reads: "The works of the most wonderful man that ever lived. Read reflect and you will not understand metaphysics enough to understand the greatness of Locke." Lefevre's name is stamped and signed in several places throughout. Clean copy. A very scarce work this is an exact facsimile of a 1782 pamphlet the only copy of which is held by the library of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society Taunton Castle.The work concerns the Monmouth Rebellion also known as the Revolt of the West an attempt by Protestant factions to overthrow the newly appointed Roman Catholic King James II in 1685.This pamphlet contains a list of 261 persons condemned by Chief Justice Jefferies in 1685 following the rebellion details about these men and the locations in which they were executed.With a three page advertisement for the publication of upcoming similar works to the rear.With the contemporary owner's inscription 'Philip Broadwead Nov 11th 1888' to the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Fraying to cloth at back strip head and tail. Marks to boards most prominent to tail of front board where there is a significant region of foxing and discolouration. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. A rare and important polemic "written in bitter hostility to the Hudson's Bay Company and exposing their operations on the Pacific Coast and among the Indian tribes and fur traders from the earliest times" Eberstadt. "Scripps author of an official life of Lincoln visited the Lake Superior Country in 1855 and upon his return made an extensive study of the region from the Great Lakes westward with special reference to the fur companies the inhabitants Hudson's Bay Company water courses and minerals. He also points out the economic advantages of the Northern region for the United States" - Decker. "Scripps who was editor and publisher of the DEMOCRATIC PRESS had visited the Lake Superior country in 1855. He discusses here primarily the area of western Canada from Lake Superior to the Pacific with comments on the Minnesota region south of the international boundary. He has a good deal to say about the fur trade and the Hudson's Bay Company.
