br. Il Mumonkan è la prima raccolta di "koan" da cui ha avuto origine l'uso della scuola zen Rinzai di proporre agli studenti, monaci o laici, dei quesiti tratti dai detti di maestri famosi. Compilato nel XIII secolo dal maestro Wumen Hui-k'ai (in giapponese, Mumon Ekai, 1183-1260), comprende quarantotto "koan" che risalgono all'epoca T'ang, l'epoca d'oro dello zen cinese. Questa traduzione, curata personalmente dal maestro Zenkei Shibayama, è particolarmente preziosa per tutti i cultori dello zen. Qui infatti ogni "koan" è seguito dai "teisho" (discorsi) dettagliati e illuminanti di Shibayama, che spiegano sia il testo del "koan" sia il commento originale, spesso altrettanto misterioso, di Mumon.
