Producing a book on fashion in the 1980s is not merely a question of immortalizing one of the most feverish periods of invention, creativity, and variety in our recent history. It also means providing a window on the increasingly pervasive advance of show-business society, and on the origins of the designer "total living" environment in which we are now permanently submerged. Ralph Lauren pillowcases, anyone? How about a sip of Absolut from my Calvin Klein Home champagne glasses? ~Excess: Fashion and the Underground in the 80s chronicles the achievements of the fashion establishment in Italy and the rest of the world via its protagonists and trends. It considers the who, what, where, when, and why of an industry that has become an economic phenomenon, with enormous influence on global culture and communication. It catalogues a world in which fashions by Armani, Versace, Valentino, Gianfranco Ferr, Fendi, Missoni, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Fiorucci, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Katherine Hamnett, Azzedine Alaa, Calvin Klein, and John Galliano appear in magazines like Vogue, Elle, Donna, Mondo Uomo, Harpers Bazaar, The Face, i-D, Interview, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Visionaire. It features work by 80s hotshot artists like Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer, Robert Mapplethorpe, Barbara Kruger, Gilbert & George, Pierre et Gilles, and Leigh Bowery.~Empirically organized as an index, Excess offers an indispensable point of reference for fashionistas, critics, and students. Rather than operating chronologically, it functions thematically, under such categories as Career Women, Sexy Women, American Gigolo, Night Clubbing, Wild Boys, Yuppies, and Graffiti. A special section curated by Peter de Potter is dedicated to the Neo 80s, featuring fashions by Jeremy Scott, Louis Vuitton, Berhard Willhelm, Balenciaga, Veronique Branquinho, and Bottega Veneta, as seen in the pages of Butt, Dazed & Confused, SleazeNation, Spin, Self Service, and Another Magazine. Additionally included are a series of appendices--equally balanced between mainstream and underground--which catalogue the new professions, new words, and new fashions.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. Special designed folded 16 p., 12 b/w photos. Yusuf Sevinçli. Oculus. [Exhibition catalogue]. Galerist Tepebasi, 14.12.2017-27.01.2018. Designed by Valentina Abenavoli. This catalogue was published on the occasion of Yusuf Sevinçli's exhibition 'Oculus' at Galerist Tepebasi between 14.12.201 7-27.01.2018. The exhibition comprises analogue, black & white photographs taken mostly in France and Turkey. Taking its title from an old Roman architectural term for a small circular or oval window or the round openings found at the center of domes. Often an oculus allows a concentrated beam of light into an otherwise dark interior and so is threshold between a world of light and one of shadow. In Sevinçli's images we are in a shadow-world in which light, meaning and beauty pass fleetingly, out of reach and into memory. There is a beautiful, poetic intelligence in Sevinçli's photographs. They are, we are told images of actual things and places. The artist's sensibility, however, articulated through the elegant contingencies of the analogue photographic process; the framing of the shot, the manipulation of the negative, the quality of the printing, renders reality dreamlike. The images are a dream-state, rich with ambiguity and metaphor; A flower, silhouetted, becomes epic and architectural. A white circle painted on a dark ground, the casual record of an act of art making takes on occult significance. A woman pulls skin tight like cloth, another's eyes sparkle with light. Stream rises, spectral like from the street. A man in movement, arms outstretched, his head hidden from us, is perhaps dancing or falling. Stairs ascend into luminosity and fiction. Political in their sensibility of oppressive ambiguity, poetic in their search for moments of transcendence, Sevinçli's photographs are exquisite signs, only partially intelligible, full of melancholy and hope. 1000 copies were printed.

The Sunday Times 20 March 2002 carries an article by Ann Treneman 'The real face of Rubinstein' discussing the discovery among Hollay's papers of her correspondence with Helena Rubinstein. The correspondence was made use of by Lindy Woodhead in her 2017 book 'War Paint: Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein: Their Lives their Times Their Rivalry'. Hollay was Rubinstein's London manager from 1914. In 1929 she severed her connection with Rubinstein announcing in The Times 10 April 1929 'that she has entirely severed her connexion with the establishment which she managed for so many years and has ACQUIRED the BUSINESS of SUZANNE VERDI 4 OLD BOND STREET' Hollay was Verdi's 'successor' but in 1933 the firm could still be listed as 'Verdi Mme. Suzanne Beauty Specialist 44 Old Bond II st.' On 8 August 1934 The Times carried a 'false report of death' for Hollay. And on 16 October 1942 she vacated the premises continuing to deal with her High Society customers from her home 31 Kensington Square. 1p. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. She begins by apologising for sending a typed letter 'it is late and I can type more than I can write!' and thanking her for an enjoyable evening 'I am afraid I was dull company but after all it is good to feel at peace with ones companion – don't you think so'. References follow to Coury's 'little enamel case' a day 'of warts moles hairs etc' 'this weeks Queens' whether Coury would really 'like a block of me in your pages'. The letter concludes: 'Please don't forget to make use of this place just when and as you please. Keep a frock or case here and change and titivate when you wish. It would make me happy to know you were finding this little Home of Beauty of some use to you. You must try and save fatigue all you can said the pot calling the kettle black!' 124 pages plus index. Line diagrams. "The coulee areas of southern Alberta provide one of the most distinctive natural habitats in the province and, indeed, in Canada. Long ignored by many as sterile and barren waste-lands, undisturbed coulees are places of great and subtle beauty. Yet it has remained very difficult for the naturalist to identify the many colorful and unusual kinds of plants which grace the coulee slopes. This book was written for such people." - from introduction. Bibliography. Unmarked. Average wear. Binding sound. Good working copy. Book
