"Le père Bougeant, facétieux et sulfureux père jésuite, féroce antijanséniste, s’aventura sur ce terrain glissant. Son livre à la fois satirique et sérieux connut une vingtaine d’éditions. Dans cet ouvrage de vulgarisation qui mit toute la classe intellectuelle au courant du passionnant débat sur la nature de l’âme des bêtes, le père Bougeant réfute Descartes, révoque Saint Augustin et Malebranche, en accordant d’emblée aux animaux âme, intelligence, passions et sentiments, non sans ajouter que chaque peuple animal possède une langue que nous ne comprenons pas" (Swann Paradis, "‘Parle et je te baptise ! De l’âme des bêtes au siècle des Lumières", Collège Glendon, York U., p. 79 sq). L'auteur fut exilé à la suite de cet écrit. (Stanislas de Guaïta, 576.
