In these pages I shall speak of The Wisdom of Life in the common meaning o the term as the art namely of ordering our lives so as to obtain the greatest possible amount of pleasure and success; an art the theory of which may be called Eudaemonology for it teaches us how to lead a happy existence. Such an existence might perhaps be defined as one which looked at from a purely objective point of view or rather after cool and mature reflection for the question necessarily involves subjective considerations would be decidedly preferable to non-existence; implying that we should cling to it for its own sake and not merely from the fear of death; and further that we should never like it to come to an end. Now whether human life corresponds or could possibly correspond to this conception of existence is a question to which as is well-known my philosophical system returns a negative answer. On the eudaemonistic hypothesis however the question must be answered in the affirmative; and I have shown in the second volume of my chief work ch. 49 that this hypothesis is based upon a fundamental mistake. Accordingly in elaborating the scheme of a happy existence I have had to make a complete surrender of the higher metaphysical and ethical standpoint to which my own theories lead; and everything I shall say here will to some extent rest upon a compromise; in so far that is as I take the common stand point of every day and embrace the error which is at the bottom of it. My remarks therefore will possess only a qualified value for the very word eudaemonology is a euphemism. Duodez 125 x 95 cm Einband etwas lichtspurig und fleckig leicht bestoßen und berieben Rücken knickspurig Schrift auf Vorsatz und der Rückseite des Frontispiz mit Tintendurchschlag es FEHLEN die Kupfer und das Verzeichnis der Kupfer im Ganzen aber ordentlich erhalten. Ein dekorativer eleganter hellrosa Biedermeier-Einband geprägt mit floralen Ornamenten. Ein Doppelblatt ist gelockert aber nicht lose. Auf der Rückseite des Frontispiz' mit dem Besitzeintrag einer Gräfin Wartensleben die auch den Vorsatz mit einem dreistrophigen Gedicht geschmückt hat. Die auf dem Titel erwähnten Kupferstiche fehlen in dem vorliegenden Band bis auf das Frontispiz mit dem Bildnis von Otto Prinz von Bayern ebenso wie die im Inhaltsverzeichnis erwähnte Beschreibung der Kupfer. Augenscheinlich wurden aus dem Band keine Blätter entfernt und das Buch wurde möglicherweise bei der Herstellung ohne die Kupfertafeln und deren Beschreibung aufgebunden. Johanna Henriette Schopenhauer geb. 9. Juli 1766 in Danzig; gest. 16. April 1838 in Jena war die Mutter des Philosophen Arthur Schopenhauer. Ihre Novelle "Die Reise nach Italien" erschien in Buchform erst 1836 bei Sauerländer in Frankfurt und der vorliegende Abdruck im Berliner Kalender von 1833 ist möglicherweise gekürzt. Die verwickelte Erzählung handelt von unglücklicher Liebe und vertauschten Kindern "Die Geisel der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts" - Arno Schmidt. "Ihre Romane spiegeln sehr stark ihre Gefühle in ihrer vergangenen von Tyrannei bestimmten Ehe wider. Die typische Johanna-Schopenhauer-Heldin verliert auf tragische Weise ihre wahre Liebe und findet sich dann aus nicht nachvollziehbaren Gründen mit einer unbefriedigenden Ehe ab was schon die zeitgenössische Kritik bemängelte." wikipedia. Fortsetzung und Schluß.": Seite 155-220: Friedrich Buchholz "Johann Graf von Capo d'Istrias oder die vier letzten Jahre der griechischen Revolution."; nach der Novelle folgt Seite 1-106 "Genealogie der regierenden hohen Häuser." und Seite 1-79 "Verzeichnis der Postcourse" i.e. die Fahrpläne der Postkutschen in Deutschland.
