Gli animali ci insegnano a relazionarci con loro, aggiungono bellezza alle nostre esistenze amandoci e apprezzandoci senza giudicarci, donandoci grandi emozioni e compagnia, aiutandoci anche nei momenti di tristezza e difficoltà. Già Freud aveva riconosciuto come "il sentimento che proviamo per i cani è lo stesso che proviamo per i bambini", preludendo ai recenti studi scientifici che dimostrano come, tra le persone e i loro animali, si formino veri e propri legami affettivi di dedizione e fedeltà. L'autrice ci parla di questa relazione, del dolore che si prova quando i nostri animali ci lasciano per sempre e di tutti gli aspetti che sarebbe opportuno conoscere e affrontare. Il lutto per la perdita di un animale da compagnia è infatti un processo simile a quello per la perdita di una persona cara. Ma la poca possibilità di esprimere questa sofferenza, determina l'impossibilità di vivere appieno i sentimenti legati a questo lutto attraverso le modalità rituali. I limiti etici ci impediscono di considerare Fido come parte della famiglia. Questo libro è stato scritto per dare indicazioni ed aiuto concreto a chi deve affrontare il dolore per la perdita del proprio animale d'affezione.

Secondo l'A. ordinariamente la parola vendetta fa pensare ad una ignobile passione che 'rende taluno avido del male di colui da cui si crede offeso, e spesse volte lo spinge a procurarlo per vie anche vili ed ingiuste [...] Or dunque senza perder tempo io dichiaro, che per vendetta non intendo una passione, ma una naturale tendenza. [...] La vendetta pubblica e' un'espressione che sta comunemente in bocca di tutti, e ch'e' adoperata da tanti valorosi scrittori, e dalle stesse leggi: potra' dirsi che con un si' autorevole consenso si sia attribuita una vera improbita' di sentimenti all'intero corpo dello stato?
