Da che mondo è mondo, chi detiene il potere si arroga il diritto di mandare a morte coloro che commettono reati di varia gravità. In questo libro abbiamo raccolto trentasette descrizioni di esecuzioni capitali che sono state eseguite tra il VII secolo d.C. e il 1930. Sono in gran parte redatte da persone che hanno assistito personalmente a tali eventi. Crediamo, infatti, che solo chi è stato testimone oculare possa comunicare per intero tutto l'orrore che esse suscitano in chi ha saputo conservare un briciolo di umanità. Alcune di queste le dobbiamo ad autori che sapevano usare la penna con grande maestria: Marin Sanudo; Pietro Verri; William Makepiece Thackeray; Charles Dickens; Mark Twain; Ivan Turgenev; George Orwell. Lo spettacolo della morte, così come quello della sessualità, stimolava emozioni forti e attirava folle enormi che spesso passavano la notte all'addiaccio pur di accaparrarsi i posti più vicini al palco. E bene tuttavia che il lettore non coltivi l'illusione che si tratti di un retaggio dei tempi passati: è molto probabile che proprio in questo momento, da qualche parte del mondo, qualcuno stia salendo i gradini che lo portano al patibolo, talvolta senza nemmeno che un giudice abbia emesso una sentenza contro di lui.
