French translation of The Laws a series of twelve Platonic dialogues written towards the end of his life. Grou a Jesuit fled to Holland when his order was suppressed in France and it was there that these Dialogues were published. Later he returned to Paris and adopted the alias Leclaire remaining there until the Revolution drove him into a second exile in England. As well as Platonic translations Grou published theological works of a popular nature including The Spiritual Life: A Comprehensive Manual for Catholics Seeking Salvation. The publisher includes a dedication to the then-living philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This set also includes a 1778 edition of La Science de Bonhomme Richard Sabin 78111 which is a French version of Benjamin Franklin's The Way to Wealth. This work includes the sayings of Poor Richard as well as the interrogation of Benjamin Franklin relating to the Stamp Act Pennsylvania's new constitution and the interrogation of William Penn by parliament. Franklin spent a good deal of time in France and was well-liked there. The Way to Wealth was his most popular work and though it first appeared in England in 1757 it was the French translation originally published in 1777 that first included his commentary on British taxation of the American colonies. Plato's Dialogues translated by Benjamin Jowett 18171893 master of Baliol College Oxford 'revised and corrected throughout with marginal analyses and an index of subjects and proper names.' 'Jowett's first intention was to produce a commentary on the Republic. But concluding that this text was to be understood only through an analysis of Plato's other works he commenced what eventually became his translations of the dialogues with introductions in which many of his own theological and philosophical ideas were embedded. The translation appeared in 1871 in four volumes and in a revised edition in five volumes in 1875. There followed a translation of Thucydides with notes on the Greek text in 1881 and of Aristotle's Politics in 1885. A third edition of his translations of Plato appeared in 1892 but the edition of the Republic which had been in a sense the foundation and starting point of all his work as an editor and translator of the Greek classics was still unfinished at his death and was completed and published by his friend and biographer Lewis Campbell. For thirty years the work had occupied the chief place among his interests. . His admirers thought that his translations of Plato and Thucydides superseded all previous translations in elegance and polish and even some modern translators have been content to use Jowett's version as a basis for their own work. But one of his twentieth-century successors in the chair has asserted that any page of Jowett's translation of Plato 'will supply some evidence of Housman's stern judgment' Lloyd-Jones 16.'
