Hardcover. 1890318477 . - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - - SIGNED BY AUTHOR -- NEW - Personal view by this conservative British philosopher. - "Scruton a don at London University and a British TV personality sets out to do philosophy rather than talk about it. He succeeds to a large extent in making the subject accessible engaging the reader in philosophic thinking. Scruton inquires into truth time God freedom morality and even sex carefully explaining who he believes is right and who is wrong in their opinions on the subjects. For instance he warns against Nietzsche and Michel Foucault and champions everyone who believes in persons with souls and free intentions and who believes in the sacred and enchantment in the world. In addition to such authoritarian judgments Scruton sometimes gets caught up in fighting internecine battles especially against the view that genuine knowledge can only be scientific; then the clarity of his writing suffers. For example "since the origin of both self and not-self is the act of self-positing nothing on either side of the barrier is anything in the last analysis but self." When he philosophizes more freely he puts the reader in a better mood: "This idea has recurred so often as to suggest that there is truth in it or a permanent need to believe so." In the final analysis Scruton accomplishes his aim of using philosophy as therapy for our modern confusions although mental health for him lies in more conservative thinking." - Publishers Weekly Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information Inc. -- with a bonus offer-- . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - FLAWLESS COPY BRAND NEW PRISTINE NEVER OPENED -- 240 pages; 6 x 9 inches - Platos Meno is a dynamic and entertaining examination of the nature and origin of the kind of excellence displayed by successful Greek leaders. That such excellence existed was difficult to deny but people expected to show it often disappointed and others expected to know about it seemed confused. Though it depended on something like knowledge it seemed impossible to pass on to others. Hence questions of social and political ethics also involve psychology and theory of knowledge. There is also an important focus on the nature of the learning process which is itself illustrated by the way characters in the dialogue respond or do not respond to the questions and encouragement of Platos protagonist Socrates. This book examines both the dialogue itself and the response to it of Platos successors from Aristotle and spurious Platonic dialogues through Cicero and an anonymous commentator on the Theaetetus to the Neoplatonists. It looks at which aspects of the dialogue they take most seriously and why. In the light of that response which often suggests a detailed reading of the text in its entirety Harold Tarrant develops a fresh and more integrated view of the original dialogue. - AUTHOR: Harold Tarrant is Professor of Classics and Head of the School of Liberal Arts at the University of Newcastle Australia. To stimulate student discussion and comparison For reference Lincoln's address at Gettysburg is included in an appendix. Translations are in English including introduction and notes as well as literary and historical commentary. -- AUTHOR: Jud Herrman is Assistant Professor of Classical Studies at Allegheny College. -- FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "Throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC at the close of each campaign season the Athenian state honored its war-dead in a public burial ceremony choosing a prominent orator to give the keynote address. This volume collects all of the surviving state funeral orations from classical Athens. Like tragedy these speeches present an image of an idealized Athens. The narratives of past Athenian glories found in these speeches feature many of the same mythical tales that were also presented on stage. Like many of the plays the funeral orations emphasize important themes such as Athenian unity their aid to suppliants and their willingness to drive away foreign invaders to protect the other Greeks. The selective version of more recent history found in the funeral orations also highlights these same qualities by focusing on the role of Athens during the Persian Wars 490-479 when the city helped save the other Greeks from invading foreigners and by passing over other events such as the Peloponnesian War 431404 in which Athens opposed fellow Greeks. Although nearly all of the surviving Greek tragedies are set in the distant mythical past the significant exception is Aeschylus Persians the audience in the theater would recognize aspects of contemporary Athens in the depiction of ancient Athenian heroes such as Theseus. The funeral orations draw similar connections more explicitly by presenting a continuous narrative tying the present generation with the great heroes of long ago." -- with a bonus offer-- . elala3432Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey 1769. First Edition in French translated by Jesuit priest Jean Nicolas Grou 1731-1803 of Plato’s last work left uncompleted at his death. As opposed to the ideal state described in his Republic the Laws presents a practical plan for a ‘second best’ constitution and state. “Under it the elite may possess modest estates and private families are allowed. The lower ranks of society now have some political rights and powers though careful regulations ensure that they will not attain political control. The rulers though decently educated are not required to be philosophers. The women are not warriors. Much of the Laws is a sort of Blue Book in which detailed rules and regulations are laid down for the conduct of elections legal proceedings religious ceremonies markets schools and irrigation…In its concrete legal social and administrative prescriptions…students of Greek history and politics can find a good deal of interest. For inevitably Plato sometimes copies and often just improves on laws regulations codes customs and expedients already obtaining in Athens or other Greek states. Political actualities can be read through Plato’s political recommendations…â€. As Alexis Leger he was a professional French diplomat of impressive suavity and limited accomplishment. As himself he was a gracious aristocrat who preferred his own company to the glitter of the salon. As St.‐John Perse pronounced SIN‐jin he was a major poet of candescent belief in the indestructibility of humanity. The Nobel Prize only confirmed the rapturous regard Mr. Perse's peers expressed for him as one of the most original of contemporary poets. His audacious use of pungent imagery and arcane symbolism set him apart as did his celebration of the inexhaustible power of life to triumph over disaster His language was ambiguous lyric and cadenced studded with subtle metaphors and sprinkled with delicate melodies more discernible by the ear than the eye. Among poets writing in English Archibald MacLeish T. S. Eliot and Louise Varese were drawn to Mr. Perse and influenced by him." NY Times Obit. <br> "Felix M. Morley 1894=1982 was an educator and journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize. Mr. Morley won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 1936 three years after he was named editorial page editor of The Washington Post. In his career he was president of Haverford College and the first correspondent in China for The Baltimore Sun. He was a brother of the author and poet Christopher Morley who died in 1957. Felix Morley who held a doctorate in political science and was the author of seven books on economics and politics was born in Haverford Pa. His family moved to Baltimore in 1900. He was graduated in 1915 from Haverford College. In 1915 Mr. Morley went to Europe and became an ambulance driver for the British Red Cross. He returned to the United States a year later to become a reporter for The Philadelphia Ledger. In 1917 he became a Washington correspondent for the United Press news agency. Two years later he won a Rhodes scholarship and studied for two years at Oxford after which he studied at the London School of Economics on a Hutchinson Research Fellowship. Several years later he won a Guggenheim Fellowship to study the organization of the League of Nations. In 1922 Mr. Morley joined The Baltimore Sun working in several Far East bureaus and in 1925 becoming the newspaper's first correspondent in China. He left The Sun in 1929 complaining that H.L. Mencken was exercising 'excessive influence' on editorial policy. From 1929 to 1931 he was director of the Geneva office of the League of Nations Association of the United States. After serving as president of Haverford College from 1940 to 1945 Mr. Morley returned to journalism working as a Washington correspondent for Barron's Weekly a position that he held until retiring from full-time newspaper or magazine work in 1954." - NY Times Obit. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Huntington Cairns. Illustrated by Hans Erni. Plato’s The Trial and Death of Socrates is a foundational text in Western philosophy that explores the ethical and political implications of Socrates' final days. Comprising four dialogues—Euthyphro Apology Crito and Phaedo—the work examines the nature of justice the role of the individual in society and the immortality of the soul. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical mission as a divine duty challenging the moral complacency of Athenian society. Crito presents a powerful argument for obeying the law even in the face of injustice while Phaedo offers a vision of death as a release of the soul to a higher realm. Together these dialogues portray Socrates not only as a martyr for truth but also as a model of rational integrity whose commitment to philosophy transcends the fear of death.
