Intended as an introduction and key to Montesquieu's L'Esprit des Loix Boulanger's theological-political treatise was edited and first published posthumously in 1761 by the Baron d'Holbach. This his most famous work Research into the Origins of Oriental Despotism speculates on the origin of human societies. The main theme described aptly by Paul Sadrin is that "Man after escaping the Flood was terrified.Everything was gradually spoiled by forgetfulness and imposture - the forgetfulness of most men and the imposture of a few leaders. Religion which had only been the memory of the disaster and the commemoration of the "renewed world" became the Revelation." This was in Boulanger's eyes the worst of crimes as the Revelation deprives man of his humanity and gives birth to the cruelest of despotisms the theocratic regime of which God is the monarch and the monarch is God.What matters to Boulanger is to expose the direct relationship between theocracy and civil despotism." p. 36-37 Sadrin Paul. "NICOLAS-ANTOINE BOULANGER 1722-1759". The Yale University Library Gazette 71.1/2 1996: 3-42. The value to the modern reader is perhaps greater in what it says about how Boulanger and those he influenced thought about how society is constructed and the destruction of freedom within society. In 16, pp. 36 + (2b). Br. rifatta.
