Presentation Copy to Secretary Danzig from Federal Official. Signed by author. xii 223 2 p. Illustrations. Today's Navy looks very different from that of only a few years ago. The end of the Cold War and the fleet drawdown have resulted in new missions and tactics and less of almost everything. In a year of journeys that took him around the globe for the better part of a year Navy Times reporter Bradley Peniston sought out the ships aircraft bases and people of this new Navy. His on-the-scene report provides an authoritative and provocative portrait of a forward-deployed fleet. Hitching rides in military aircraft Peniston flew 65 000 air miles in 1998 to reach thirty-six ships submarines and bases in five fleets. Those efforts allowed him to observe naval exercises throughout Europe and Latin America as well as the war zone in the Persian Gulf. From the open ocean to Europe's cold claustrophobic seas this seasoned reporter captures the triumphs frustrations excitement boredom and personal lives of the officers sailors and airmen in nearly every type of Navy ship boat and aircraft--in their own words. Peniston's colorful and expressive style which has earned him a reputation as one of America's foremost military writers is full of facts figures and graphic descriptions of today's naval tasks and techniques but his most important contribution was eliciting the amazingly candid wit and wisdom of hundreds of the Navy's men and women. Whether hunting submarines above the Arctic Circle or flying over the white-hot Persian Gulf riding with the special boat squadrons off San Diego or prowling in an attack submarine. dealing with complicated shiphandling off Tierra del Fuego or painting a Romanian AIDS orphanage officers and crews talked openly to Peniston. They toldhim what they like and dislike about the Navy their jobs their ships and aircraft but most of all they described what it's like to be Out There. Easily accessible to the general reader yet fresh and illuminating for naval professionals of all stripes and eras this unforgettable all-Navy cruisebook serves as an invaluable historic snapshot of the service in an important period of transition.
