"Having exhausted our entire stock of unbound Posters through responding to demands for same we concluded some time ago to reissue in pamphlet form practically all heretofore shown by us and this Album is the result." -- page 1 The book contains 57 of 60 letterpress plates by various designers reprinting advertisements the company produced from the years 1895-1902. Among the exceptionally designed and colorful images are twenty designed by Will Bradley and one by Louis Rhead. There are also excellent works by Crittenden Carolyn Huntington Binner and many others. A sought after volume of plates. There is an additional watermarked advertisement titled "The Song" laid in that does not appear to be originally part of the volume.Wear soiling and staining to cloth with rubbing to extremities; front free endpaper with creasing at corner and some pencil marks plates 15 23 and 35 are lacking plate 11 with closed tear at bottom slightly affecting the illustration plate 32 with a 4x3" section cut away at top corner a few other plates with minor closed tears at edges not affecting the artwork all plate colors bright some with light toning a few with fingerprints in margins. First edition and a lovely copy. Bradley 1688-1732 first professor of botany at Cambridge was one of the earliest British writers to treat agriculture as a science. His writings were prolific including about twenty volumes dealing with agriculture. This book is one of his most important. "Cost of production was beginning to interest farmers more then it had done. For a hundred years the business had been steadily becoming more commercial. Instead of being rich because he grew a lot to eat a man was beginning to find that he was only rich if he grew a lot to sell and naturally he wanted to sell at a profit. To do that he must know what it cost him to grow the produce.and so writers began to insert costings in their books and Bradley was one of the earliest to do this. The Complete Body contains numerous costs but I suspect they were of common knowledge rather than anything more immediately collected and closely scrutinized yet they must have been accurate enough by the author's readers as not unreasonable."-Fussell I pp. 111-12. 6196Offered here is a wonderful pen and ink drawing and paste-up for the title-page of an 1899 pamphlet or booklet for the Twentieth Century Club in Chicago. Matted and framed under glass image size: 7 x 4 3/4 inches. “The origins of Chicago’s Twentieth Century Club lay in the belief that the creation of a cultural and literary club composed of members from the city’s best families could help Chicago overcome its reputation for coarseness. Spearheaded by Mrs. George R. Genevieve Jones Grant of Prairie Avenue and several of her friends the club was organized to replicate similar organizations in New York and elsewhere. Potential members were nominated and vetted before they were offered membership. The club suffered from open tensions over control the club and the nature of its cultural and social activities. This page from Jones’s father Fernando’s scrapbook provides a sense of the club’s mission the social struggles of the rapidly growing city and the elite’s consciousness about the city’s reputation compared to that of its chief rival New York.†-clipping from a scrapbook ca. 1900. With two sets of overlays in card added by Bradley at the bottom to affect the proper spacing of the lettering which reads: “1899/ Constitution/ History/ Officers/ List of Members/ and Meetings.†Fine. unknown

Uniformly bound in publisher's half red morocco over blue cloth covered boards. Spines have raised bands gilt lettering to two compartments and gilt decorations to remaining four compartments: crossed whips with a fox's brush and riding hat; duck; horse's head and a horse shoe. With marbled endpapers top edges gilt. 896 plates 32/vol after Finch Mason R. M. Alexander Cuthbert Bradley and others the majority tinted duotone lithographs. Glossy b/w 'Fores's Illustrated Catalogue' from 6 to 22 pp bound into the rear of each volume followed by ads for other Fores's publications. Slight unevenness to color of spines as usual minor scuffing to some edges & corners. Condition of covers ranges from VG to VG. Four volumes have a few flecks of foxing on the front &/or rear endpapers. Top corner of p.136 vol XVIII missing a 1/2" piece. Otherwise the interiors of texts including plates are in near fine condition. . A very handsome set. Inside the front cover of each volume is the armorial bookplate of WILLIAM DUGALD STUART Esquire J. P. For co. Beds. Lieut.
