1890156421London: George Bell and Sons 1890. The real woman of magical nature must remain undiscovered and triumphant First edition first impression trade issue in the scarce glassine jacket. The play published under the pseudonym "Michael Field" by Edith Emma Cooper and her aunt and sometime lover Katharine Harris Bradley tells of the reign and fall of Mary Queen of Scots. There was also a limited issue of 60 copies bound in vellum. Selwyn Image 1849-1930 designed the binding for this title and his regal blooming thistles are an entirely appropriate example of his fin-de-siècle decorative art. The borders incorporate Mary's motto "En ma fin est mon commencement" "In my end is my beginning". An artist designer and poet Image was published in The Savoy and was the seventh Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford from 1910-16. Oscar Wilde considered The Tragic Mary one of the two most beautiful books of the nineteenth century "in appearance" quoted in Hadjiafxendi p. 243 the other being Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Poems 1870. Cooper and Bradley acknowledge in their Preface both the necessity and futility of dramatizing Mary's life; "the Queen herself lies sculptured in Westminster Abbey waiting with the serenity of patience a judgement other than that of men. Yet we are not permitted to withhold our human verdicts if she is to live as a presence in our midst. our beliefs are but conjectures and the real woman of magical nature must remain undiscovered and triumphant" Preface. Octavo. Original brown paper-covered boards spine and covers lettered in black covers illustrated in black with blossoming thistles and crown motifs designed by Selwyn Image edges uncut. With original glassine dust jacket and later handmade paper dust jacket. Two previous booksellers' notes loosely inserted. Small mark to spine a little foxing and offsetting to endpapers. A near-fine copy unopened in sharp glassine spine panel a little toned trivial chips to head of spine panel and corners a few marks to panels flaps a touch creased. Little is known about Bradley's childhood aside from an early interest in gardening and the fact that he lived in the vicinity of London a city at the time with many amateur naturalists. Though Bradley lacked a university education his first publication Treatise of Succulent Plants gained him traction with influential patrons like James Petiver and later Hans Sloane. With their support he was proposed and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712 at the age of 24. Two years later Bradley visited the Netherlands and took an interest in horticulture. He spent the next decade back in England writing treatises on topics related to this central interest like weather fertiliser productivity and plant hybridisation. In recognition of his work in the field and with the thereafter unfulfilled promise that he would found and fund a university botanical garden the University of Cambridge named Bradley its first professor of botany in 1724 a position he would hold until his death. As Bradley was not a wealthy man in his later life and as this was an unsalaried position the newly minted academic continued to focus most of his efforts on making a living through publishing. According to his rival and successor John Martyn as well as his successor son Thomas Martyn Bradley did this at the expense of his students whom he reportedly neglected to even lecture to. Bradley made notable innovations and discoveries across a wide array of disciplines. For example this work included directions for the making and use of a rudimentary kaleidoscope to aid in formal garden design and layout. He also wrote about cooking and was the first to publish recipes in the English language using the then-exotic pineapple as the main ingredient. His History of Succulent plants was the seminal treatise on the topic and his studies of tulips and auriculas helped further accurate theories of plant reproduction. Bradley was also a pioneer in the examining of fungal spore germination and the pollination of plants by insects. His publications additionally contained information on how to build and use greenhouses early theories regarding agricultural productivity and pond ecology. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. Photos generally very good plus: a few with light spotting or adhesive remnants to versos.

This is a fascinating collection of artsy experimental photographs fashion and furnishing designs created by a pair of friends or lovers two gay men in San Francisco in the late 1980s to 1990s.

All we could learn about these men came from the items here. There is a clipping from The National Alliance newspaper with an image taken by Kevin Severs at an LGBT demonstration in San Francisco in 1988. Most of the present photos reveal him as their creator and there are pages of his handwritten captions and processing notes. One of Kevin's favorite subjects was his friend or lover Jamie – mostly black and white artistic shots of Jamie nude or evocatively posed and a few color photos of Jamie and others in drag. Two of the four contact sheets reveal a Black woman model one looks like friends at a party including a few of Jamie and one shows a petting zoo Native American-costumed horseback riders and a tepee. There's also a great large photo of Jamie lovingly inspecting a pony.

Also included is a sketchbook of fashion furniture and home designs. A business card taped to its front has Jamie's image and full name James Calvin Bradley revealing him as “Hair Stylist & Make-Up Artist†available by appointment for “Traditional Fashion With A Modern Twist.†The book holds over 50 drawings mostly women's fashions intended for a “Fall Show.†Other notes include selling prices fabric ideas and thoughts like “Drag dress†“Great idea for Lea†and “Scarf can act as cape.†There are floor plans and furniture designs for a new home in 1992 a “Summer night outfit 1995†color samples for eyeliner and one homoerotic drawing. Three pages hold sketches and plans for “My Horse Farm and Country Cottage†with affirmations such as “It will come!†and “I have lots of time.†

A sweet creative collection showing the work and dreams of a pair of gay men in San Francisco in the late 1980s and '90s. unknown
