This edition is a thoroughly revised re-arranged and enlarged edition of the 1891 first edition and up to the date of printing was the most thorough and comprehensive dictionary "of that stage of the English language" i.e. "words used by English writers from the 12th to the 15th century." There are no marks or names of previous owner. The binding is the original brick-red open linen cloth with almost unnoticeable rubbing at ends of spine. Cloth-backed decorated boards gilt-lettered spine. A very fine copy. Thayer accompanied the aging Ralph Waldo Emerson to California via rail on their cross-country 1871 trek stopping briefly at Salt Lake City thence to San Francisco and Yosemite Valley. Thayer scrupulously recorded everything that came from the old sage's lips including the circumstances of his meeting with Brigham Young etc. Many of the illustrations are views of Yosemite. Ex-library with bookplates some foxed and stained cut to one leaf not affecting text. A good copy but lacking the frontispiece. . Imprints 574. This was issued both in the US and UK. Robinson in her Wayward Women notes that the earliest issue of this that she could find was Boston 1821. Bradley and her husband left England in the Spring of 1818. Bradley was the only woman aboard the Sally when it was blown onto the Barbary coast of north-west Africa. She and the survivors were captured by a passing caravan and while the men were sent off to be sold to the British counsel in Mogadir Eliza was held in the village were she spent the next five months until she was reunited with her husband and returned to England.
