1905 · 0009097 — LEWIS AND CLARK CENTENNIAL EXPO PORTLAND OREGON. Good. 1905. On offer is an interesting letter and document of the famous Lewis and Clark Centennial Expo held in Portland Oregon in 1905. The letter is six pages long and addressed to “My Dear Sisters” and sent to a “Mrs. Grace G. Bradley” of West Liberty Iowa. The writer is a Blanche Bradley of Grant Street Portland Oregon. After writing pleasantries to her sisters she speaks of attending the Portland World’s Fair. “I was in the fair Tuesday. We all went and took our dinner came home about 6 as the fireworks they said would not amount to much and so they didn’t so we really didn’t miss anything. There was not much to see except a crowd mention to Mr. and Mrs. Stand they were so pleasant I had a nice visit with them.” She goes to the fair early and starts in ‘the government building’ goes across the ‘Bridge of Nations’ and ‘came up along the trail and oh my it was hot and hotter.’ They spend some time in the shade trying to cool down from the heat then see a man named Kilpatrick ‘ride his wheel down his stairway he is one legged you know and at 5 we saw him ride his auto up a steep incline and there was a landing at the top where he turned around and then came down.” The California building she sees next which is ‘the finest state building’. After a long day she is very tired and heads home writing to her sisters that she would love for them to come to Portland and see the fair with her.” The letter presents an intimate account of the life of a Portlander during the World’s Fair that put it on the map. The letter is in good shape showing little effects of use or age. The writing is clear and concise.
