Image 9-1/2 x 12 inches; attractively gilt-framed with lettered French mat 17-1/2 x 19-1/2 inches overall. Original Drawing of Mr. Verdant Green at Cricket. A popular Victorian literary character was Mr. Verdant Green an Oxford Freshman hero of several books written and illustrated by a Midland vicar Rev. Edward Bradley 1827-1889 under the pen-name of Cuthbert Bede. Bradley had learned wood-engraving from no less than George Cruikshank but as Houfe notes "remained very much the amateur illustrating his own books.and others in a jolly and careless style." He also drew for Punch and "was one of the first illustrators to satirise photography."<br/><br/>This drawing jolly and careless shows two sketches of the hapless freshman unsuccessfully defending a wicket--the drawings appear in more finished wood-engraved form on pages 100-101 of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green-- and a more formal portrait done in the year in which The Adventures first appeared thus making it an Oxford literary and cricket item all in one. 18945083bdBoston: Roberts Brothers 1894. Octavo burgundy cloth & green illustrated boards hardcover illus. frontis. 82 pp. Interior upper hinge broken; binding still sound; light edgewear. Illustrated throughout. From story: Little Tommy sat on the doorsteps before his house one summer’s day and the hot sun streamed down over him in a flood. Tommy was very glad however to be so warm for he was just recovering from a long illness and was so pale and thin that the sun seemed only to put life and strength into him and to do him no harm whatever. The little boy was dressed in a suit of blue clothes just like those of a sailor with anchors of white braid on the shoulders with a large embroidered collar and with trousers very wide at the bottom. On his head was a wide-brimmed straw hat which surely was very unlike a sailor’s hat. Tommy however was not a sailor though there was no knowing what he might be later in life; as yet he had not launched his bark for a voyage of his own but had only been towed along in the wake of larger craft. In one chubby hand was carried a doll-like figure knitted from yarn stuffed with bran and adorned with fierce mustachios like a Spanish cavalier. This was Jock -- Tomy’s constant companion. The book addresses the attitudes and challenges surrounding early photography and attempts to portray a serious scientific pursuit in a leisurely and lighthearted context. Photographic Pleasures is both a lampooning of "serious" Victorian-era photography and a taunting commentary of the personalities and social attitudes of the time. The book begins with a note to the reader suggesting that the reason for the increase in popularity of photography as an amateur hobby or leisure pursuit is the fact that the technology is still new and in its infancy." - University of Glasgow Special Collections Department Book of the Month.
