The book is written entirely in French. Leather covers with decorative gilt borders and gilt decorations on the spine; marbled end papers and marbling on all page edges. With a Table of Contents at the back of the book.<br /><br />Condorcet who denounced slavery was a French philosopher and mathematician. His ideas including support for a liberal economy free and equal public instruction constitutional government and equal rights for women and people of all races have been said to embody the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment and Enlightenment rationalism. In "Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind" originally published in 1795 he dealt with theoretical thought on perfecting the human mind and analyzing intellectual history based on social arithmetic. Condorcet divides his work into ten <em>époques</em> tracing human history from the initial formation of societies through the development of agriculture the invention of writing the intellectual and scientific achievements of classical Greece the progress not uninterrupted of the sciences the invention of printing and the tense relationship between scientific progress and 'the yoke of authority'. Closing with two chapters on the period from Descartes until the French Revolution and on his expectations for future human progress Condorcet demonstrates his optimism: 'Our hopes for the future state of the human species can be reduced to these three important points: the destruction of inequality between nations; the progress of equality within nations; and finally the real perfection of humanity. Are not all nations bound one day to approach the state of civilisation reached by the most enlightened freest least prejudiced of peoples such as the French and the Anglo-Americans' p.328</p><p>Concorcet's work was instantly popular with 1795 printings in Paris and Zürich; it was swiftly translated into English printed in both London and Philadephia and German Tübingen before Zatta in Venice published an Italian translation by Luigi Bossi in 1797. Bien que Girondin (député de Saône-et-Loire), Masuyer critique le plan de Condorcet et de Romme, jugé "destructeur de l’égalité et générateur de despotisme", pour proposer un projet global "d’éducation nationale". Si tous les hommes sont égaux en droit, l’instruction publique doit être commune à tous, gratuite et graduelle et les établissements d’enseignement proportionnellement répartis sur l'ensemble du territoire. In fact Stanley Jevons has called it one of the earliest works on 'economie pure' He also included it in his famous list of 'mathematico-economic' works for Condorcet expressed his ideas on fiscal reform and on freedom of commerce and trade in mathematical terms" from Anton Gerits' 'Condorcet's Vie de Monsieur Turgot'. Dans cet ambitieux essai inspiré par "l'Esquisse d’un tableau des progrès de l’esprit humain" de Condorcet, l'autrice dresse un panorama érudit de la production artistique et littéraire des grandes civilisations de l'antiquité en relation avec le développent technique et moral des sociétés qui les ont portées en étendant son analyse aux civilisations extraeuropéennes: Perse, Egypte, Chine, etc. La critique de l'époque reçut le livre avec réserve; Dussault et Suard jugèrent un tel travail "au-dessus des forces d’une jeune femme". (Cordier, 'Bibliotheca Sinica', p. 69. France littéraire, XI, p. 101 'The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature', p. 88.). Louise-Marie-Victoire de Chastenay, dite "Victorine" (1771-1855) reçut une excellente éducation. Traductrice, musicienne, botaniste, elle fit partie des cercles littéraires, politiques et scientifiques de la capitale au lendemain de la Révolution et entra en relation avec les personnalités du moment: Bonaparte, Barras, Fouché, Arago, Cuvier, Félicité de Genlis qui fut sa tutrice et Germaine de Staël, elle dut se retirer précocement à la suite de graves problèmes de santé. Tache à un coin de la reliure du tome I. Petit accroc à un coin. Ex-dono manuscrit de l'autrice sur la page de titre du premier volume. Bel exemplaire, très frais, très bien relié à l'époque.
