Parmi les premiers, il fait la différence entre la première philosophie de Renouvier, le néo-criticisme, doctrine du fini et de la contingence, "son titre devant la postérité" et "l'eschatologie personnaliste" des derniers travaux du philosophe, "roman d'aventures cosmiques, écrit par un polytechnicien pour des pasteurs protestants". It gave James his first great lift out of despair. On 30 April 1870 he recorded the decisive experience in his diary: "I think that yesterday was a crisis in my life. I finished the first part of Renouvier's 2nd Essay and saw no reason why his definition of free will – the sustaining of a thought because I choose to when I might have other thoughts – need be the definition of an illusion. At any rate I will assume for the present – . . .- that it is no illusion. My first act of free will shall be to believe in free will.
