In 8, pp. XVI + 688. Br. ed. con lievi manc. rip. Bordi intonsi. Cossa, p. 273.

Vol. 22 pp. 375-389.

First appearance of this paper revealing the results of experiments with the galvanic elements using pairs of small antimony and bismuth bars welded in series which Oersted performed together with Fourier during his visit to Paris. This constitutes the invention of the first thermo-electrical pile. Oersted and Fourier had found that heat had a significant effect upon the performance of the galvanic element. - "Seebeck seems to have had another theory about this. However I have experimented with the matter and found the conjecture correct. I believe that this discovery will be of far-reaching consequence. The laws for this new effects are I suppose in reality the same as for the galvanic battery; yet this looks so different that I have been obliged to spend a great deal of my time during the last fortnight in discovering and defining them.". In a letter of somewhat later date to prince Christian he states that he has made the experiments "in conjunction with Fourier the secretary of the mathematical department of the Institute". Oersted when reading this paper to the Academy on 31st of March 1823 proposed the name "thermo-electric" for these currents a name which has since been adopted everywhere. They proved with different experiments that the effect depended solely on the heating of the plates in the voltaic arrangements. Ørsted calls Seebech's observations "the most beautiful of the discoveries which have as yet grown out of mine his discovery of electromagnetism three years before""We learn from his letters that thet the experiments on which the paper was founded had taken him 3 weeks a space of time which evidently much too short for the performance of the work; thus Ørsted himself points out a fundamental flaw in the experiments but there has been no time to remedy it. The work is of interest both by what has been gained through it and by what does not plainly appear; in some of its results it is the precursor of Ohm's law and by its defects it shows how great was the feat of the actual discovery of this law."Kirstine Meyer. The offered issue contains further Poisson "Sur le Phénomene des anneaux colorés" pp. 337-347. 1962505862Harvard University Press 1962. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. FINE/Very Good. xiv 349pp. B/W frontispiece portraits of all five prophets. 8vo sewn binding in green cloth black stamped lettering. Exceedingly clean and sharp with fresh pages and tight binding; DJ price clippeda bit toned and rubbed around the edges. 'A study of five French thinkers and a school - friends disciples enemies — whose works evoke the image of a new age of prophecy. Tur-got Condorcet Saint-Simon and the Saint-Simonians Fourier and Comte form an unbroken chain of intellectual transmission from the Enlightenment through the first half of the nineteenth century. These men were crisis phil-osophers system-makers moralists magnificent obsessives intoxicated with the future. Mr. Manuel has combined psychological portraiture with philosophical and historical analysis. His fresh reading of underestimated thinkers is based on manuscripts as well as more familiar sources suggesting new insights. Historians of Marxism will be particularly interested in his interpretation of the social doctrines and philosophies of history; Freudians in his exploration of new attitudes toward love among the Saint-Simonians Fourier and Comte; scientists in his description of the imaginative projects of Turgot and Condorcet; students of the varieties of religious experience in his treatment of the Saint-Simonian cult and the Positivist religion. From the DJ flap. 'Each of these figures is ac corded a highly sophisticated and compact biographical treat- ment and subsequently personal details are appropriately in jected into the unfolding tale of the intellectual contribution of the thinker. As Professor Manuel proceeds he compares and contrasts the thinker of the chapter with the men already intro- duced and foreshadows the approaching 'prophet.' The historical context in which the prophets lived is expertly insinuated; so too the historical impact of the five men on the thought and practice of our own age. If Professor Manuel's plan appears highly ambitious it must be immediately stated that its execu tion has been eminently successful.' Donald J. Harvey review in Political Science Quarterly. 188338901Breslau: Henry Hall. Good with no dust jacket. 1883. Leather. B&W Illustrations; Herein is the first mathematical study of heat diffusion originally presented as a paper to the Academie des Sciences in 1807. Based his reasoning on Newton's law of cooling namely that the flow of heat between two adjacent molecules is proportional to the extremely small difference of their temperatures. Here were three important contributions in this work one purely mathematical two essentially physical. In mathematics Fourier claimed that any function of a variable whether continuous or discontinuous can be expanded in a series of sines of multiples of the variable. Though this result is not correct without additional conditions Fourier's observation that some discontinuous functions are the sum of infinite series was a breakthrough. Fourier was famous for being the first to recognize and describe the greenhouse effect causing global warming in 1824-1827 This is the 1822 edition reprinting by Henry Hall in Berlin in 1883 itself a fairly scarce item. Covers detached. Textblock is solid and clean. 2 full page plates in the back dsiplaying 20 figures numerous equations and charts throughout. Large Paper. French Language. No markings. Presumably the M. In 'M. Fourier' stands for Mr or Monsieur. No record of this coming to auction. . Henry Hall hardcover
GUIDA EDITORI 2003 231 PP.
