This is not part of Bacon's New Abridgement of the Law which underwent many printings in the mid 18th and early 19th century but the first and only edition of a totally separate publication although the subject matter was indeed included in Bacon's Abridgement. The Advertisement at the front indicates that this book was published separately not out of the greed of the the proprietors Bacon et al but to pre-empt a piracy in progress - "Alarmed at such an attempt upon a work in which they were so deeply interested they endeavoured by remonstrances to prevail with the parties to relinquish their design; but these proving ineffectual no other means were left them of asserting their claims then by making a separate Publication of the Tract themselves". Full calf iv 251p. i p.245-352 rear endpaper absent. Externally quite worn with covers detached spine about gone. Text block firm with no loosened pages other than the first few which are detached. The puns in this volume often bring a hidden delight along with the ten etched engravings by John Leech all of which are hand colored. Cicero Denouncing Cataline is issued as a frontispiece instead of at the end of the book. Bound in 3/4 red polished calf over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers all edges marbled raised bands with lettering gilt and compartments fully gilt decorated edges rubbed. Blackstone cites it the Commentaries 1765-1769; Barton says it "contains a great deal of curious and diffuse learning" in his Elements of Conveyancing 1802. This work is an account of the valuations of all ecclesiastical benefices who paid the first fruits and tenths annates. The work was originally issued in 1711 and was compiled by John Ecton. Seven editions of the work appeared between 1723 and 1796 under the title 'Liber Valorum et Decimarum'. Bacon changed the name of this work to 'Liber Regis' before making his own additions. This work has been published without any mention of Ecton. Ecton's preface remains in-tact with no revision on the part of Bacon. The Gentleman's Magazine for 1786 and 1787 discussed this plagiarism in both issues. Ecton was employed in the first-fruits department of the office of Queen Anne's Bounty where he was the receiver of the tenths of the clergy. This work is a comprehensive list of the Benefices in England and Wales that are charged with the payment of the First Fruits and Tenths. Each Diocese is presented in alphabetical order. The First Edition of Bacon's 'Editorial' of this work which has a few additions following Ecton's original work. Bacon was a British clerk and editor who spent much of his life in the first-fruits department of Queen Anne's Bounty office. ESTC No. T142990. In a full calf binding .
