18760008153<p>On offer is the working log and financial ledger of a sea captain in the Connecticut River and coastal trade moving coal and stone by water between the river towns of Connecticut and larger coastal markets.</p><p>The book belonged to Captain Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917. Captain C.H. Bacon was part of a lineage of New England sea captains whose coastal trade in raw materials laid the foundation for an expanding America transporting the stone and coal that built the booming New York metropolis. See biographical notes for more on the Bacon family.</p><p>For nearly 100 pages Bacon's log tracks almost two years of his workload as Master of schooners mainly the George Gillum which historical newspaper records show Bacon as Master for many parts of the years 1876-1879. A further 38 pages at the rear of the diary act as a ledger of the Captain's work-related debts and payments to local tugboats laborers and others providing further insight into the people and boats with whom he did business.</p><p>Capt. Bacon's meticulous record keeping allows researchers to trace his exact routes and the expenses associated with his work. For example on some days he would load up coal at Chappell's Dock in New London CT from FH. Chappell & Co. on the Thames and deliver to places like Gowanus Creek Red Hook and Harlem. He indicates stops at Portland Haddam and Maromas which were hubs for brownstone and granite quarries. He also references stops at other Eastern Seaboard hubs and ports such as Tottenville New London New Haven Wethersfield Rock Landing Essex and more.</p><p>The log is especially interesting for its repeated references to tugboat towing. Captain Bacon frequently notes when his schooner was taken in tow identifying the tug the route or location and the amount paid. He is frequently towed by the O.V. Coffin a steam tug built in 1870 in Philadelphia PA. but he also worked with dozens of other captains and vessels in towing his schooner to its destinations.</p><p>Some of the dozens of other vessels he names are Steam Tugs such as the <em>Admiral Farragut A.M. Smith J. Warren Coulston</em>. He similarly discusses many Steam Propellers such as the <em>General A.E. Burnside</em><em></em> which was owned by Thames Tow Boat and Co. and captained at the time by Roswell M. Waterman. Finally Capt. Bacon interacted frequently with other ship captains such as Master Richard L. Buell who at this time was master of the <em>Gleam</em><em></em> a Sloop built in Brookhaven New York. Wharfage $6.00</em>" Dec 4 1877</p><p>This would be a highly desirable addition to a collection focused on maritime archives the urban development of New York or the Northeast coasting trade during the Industrial Revolution offering a primary lens into the grit stone and everyday enterprise that literally built modern America.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> The book is leather-bound measures approx 5.75x3.5 inches and contains about 120 pages. It is 100% complete with the majority of the book being Bacon's daily log and embedded financial notes and the final 38 pages being a ledger of financial transitions where he lists debts to be paid and payment dates. The manuscript is written in pencil and is legible. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition with expected signs of age.</p><p><strong>Bio Notes: </strong>Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917 was born in Middletown Middlesex County Connecticut to parents Captain Charles Bacon 1815-1902 and Eunice Bridgham 1816-1851. His father was a sea captain for many years but by the 1870 census the senior Bacon had given up sailing for a life of farming which is how the young Cpt. Bacon was confirmed as the keeper of this log book.</p><p>In 1868 Capt C.H. Bacon married Adaline Annolia Bailey 1850-1930 and together they had at least seven children. One of their sons Cpt. Charles Russell Bacon 1871-1937 continued the family tradition of captaining ships on the river and after working his way up was best known for commanding the SS Hartford which ran between New York City and Hartford until 1931 when it was retired and scrapped.</p>

He was the author of the book History of the Revolution of the Basque Provinces and Navarra. 1833-1837 in which his experience in this period is narrated. He is also the author of the book entitled Six years in Biscay 1831-1837 where he narrates the sites of Bilbao during the First Carlist War. The book in its English edition contains a plan and four engravings of the town of Bilbao. There is a Spanish translation of Victor Luis de Gaminde from 1838. The First Carlist War was a civil war in Spain from 1833 to 1840 the first of three Carlist Wars. It was fought between two factions over the succession to the throne and the nature of the Spanish monarchy: the conservative supporters of the late king's brother Carlos de Borb¢n or Carlos V became known as Carlists carlistas while the progressive supporters of the regent Maria Christina acting for Isabella II of Spain were called Liberals liberales cristinos or isabelinos. Aside from being a war of succession about the question who the rightful successor to king Ferdinand VII of Spain was the Carlists' goal was the return to an absolute monarchy while the Liberals sought to defend the constitutional monarchy. This edition has the comma to line 8 of the title which Gibson only notes as being a variant for the second issue. However it would appear that the first issue has this comma also. This work comprises of several previously unpublished writings including a biography on Bacon by the editor William Rawley. The editor of this work William Rawley was Sir Francis Bacon's chaplain and literary executor. He preserved and oversaw the posthumous publication of many of Bacon's works. Bacon the compiler of this massive volume was rector of All-Saints Parish in Frederick County and domestic chaplain in Maryland to the Right Honorable Frederick Lord Baltimore. Bacon worked on the LAWS for thirteen years and publication took an additional four years to complete. It is considered to be the most important legal work published in the colony covering the years 1637 through 1763 and supplemented by extensive indices. The work is also noted for its typography the quality of the printing and the first appearance of the seal of Maryland on the titlepage. In A HISTORY OF PRINTING IN COLONIAL MARYLAND 1686-1776 Lawrence C. Wroth describes the work as "not only the most important of the legal publications of the Province of Maryland but it happens also to have been a specimen of typography which was not exceeded in dignity and beauty by any production of an American colonial press.In scholarly and systematic arrangement as well as in accuracy and completeness it excelled any of the former bodies of law which the Province had possessed.As an easy and dependable guide to the store-house of Maryland history it remains still without rival." Presentation copy boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper "For George with all best wishes Francis Bacon." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph of Bacon on the front panel by Cecil Beaton. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes crucifixions and portraits of close friends his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth set against flat nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series" and his work which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures the 1950s screaming popes the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures the early 1960s crucifixions the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends the 1970s self-portraits and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. From the mid-1960s he mainly produced portraits of friends and drinking companions either as single or triptych panels. Following the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971 his art became more sombre inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. The climax of this later period is marked by masterpieces including his 1982's "Study for Self-Portrait" and Study for a Self-Portrait—Triptych 1985–86. Methuen hardcover

Fifth edition of Bacon’s collection of exceedingly significant scientific experiments and observations on natural history published posthumously by his personal chaplain William Rawley. It was in this work that Bacon strove to separate his views of natural history from those of his contemporaries by building on a notion of the “new science†rather than collecting pleasant pictures and descriptions. The second work is Bacon’s highly acclaimed yet unfinished utopian novel New Atlantis which details the customs people society and history of the fictitious island of Bensalem and the Salomon House their cooperative college of science. The “new science†described in this work along with Bacon’s other writings was so influential that it eventually contributed to the formation of the Royal Society DSB I p. 376 and generally pp. 372-377.<br /> <br /> Bacon 1561-1626 was an English statesman natural philosopher and advocate of the inductive method in science. Ahead of his time Bacon conceived a new means of acquiring true knowledge by observation experiment and inductive reasoning. His new experimental method was to encompass an account of the current knowledge of the world with the new instruments where everyone would be capable of engaging in scientific investigation for the betterment of humankind. Titled "Ice Cream" dated "Nov. 1918" and signed in pencil. 3 15/16 x 5 inches. Printed by the artist with her smudges in the margins. In very good condition but with traces of adhesive verso. Rare. 1918 was the first year that Bacon made prints producing drypoints using a heavy steel needle on zinc plates which she printed on an unused press which she found in the corner of Kenneth Hays Miller's life drawing studio at the Art Students League. Working with fellow student Anne Rector she became so interested in drypoint that it supplanted painting as her main artistic medium. "The abstraction of design the physical distortion of the figures and the large flat areas of light and dark found in Peggy Bacon's earrly drypoints.dated November 1918 were a result of her confrontation with the avant-garde forces active in New York at the time." Contents very good with reading wear at the ring holes and some modest toning and offsetting. Contains roughly 350 densely-typed pages both recto and verso with occasional ephemera mounted throughout. More than 150000 words and appears complete. An extraordinary vernacular history of the outbreak of World War II. Though the title page suggests a diary covering only a brief period the project seems to have quickly outgrown Bacon's original intentions. From the German invasion of Poland September 1 1939 through the bombing of Pearl Harbor for more than two years Bacon records the latest news and developments from Europe and elsewhere.<br /> Summarizing and sometimes transcribing both radio reports and newspaper headlines Bacon writes clearly and with a strong narrative often deftly juggling multiple developments throughout the world. Bacon’s father appears to have been a prominent Quaker from the Philadelphia area which may account for his obsession with the war. He attended Haverford College from 1920-23. Curiously the Haverford yearbook contains this remembrance of Bacon: "By no means the least marvelous of his accomplishments is his uncanny ability to sit down at a typewriter and tear off unlimited numbers of theses at the terrific rate of nearly a thousand words per hour."<br /> <br /> An intriguing day-to-day account of the war by a Philadelphia pacifist. hardcover
