The work is divided into two parts the first dealing with Socrates as an 'ironist' and the second with the concept of irony per se. ".Irony set the pattern for subsequent writings by its masterful and at times lyrical style its humour and satire. Because of its subtlety the dissertation has often been misunderstood. In particular it has commonly been viewed as a youthful Hegelian writing whereas actually it is an ironic attack on both Hegelianism and romanticism each being made to overwhelm the other.
