Envoi signé : « Pour Albert Dubout fraternellement Marcel ». . « La collaboration de ces deux grands méridionaux que furent l'écrivain Marcel Pagnol et le dessinateur Albert Dubout est tenue pour capitale pour la compréhension de leur oeuvre respective. Pourtant elle ne prit effet qu'en 1936 alors que Pagnol écrivait pour le théâtre depuis 1923. Dubout de son côté âgé de 31 ans était déjà célèbre. C'est par l'intermédiaire du caricaturiste Toé directeur de la publicité de la Société des films de l'écrivain que Dubout fit la connaissance de Pagnol et réalisa la première affiche de César qui venait d'être porté à l'écran. Dès lors de Fanny à Manon des Sources l'artiste réalisa des affiches pour tous les films de Pagnol qui contribuèrent notamment à l'immense popularité de l'oeuvre du dramaturge. Parallèlement par leur qualité les illustrations de Dubout participèrent au succès de librairie des romans de Pagnol . Maître du jeu Dubout laisse libre cours à son imagination débridée ponctuée de connotations comiques et grivoises. Il affectionne les contrastes les plus étonnants et a parfois recours à des effets de plongée et de contre-plongée familiers au cinématographe. Après César Marcel Pagnol confiera en 1948 à Dubout les illustrations de la trilogie Marius Fanny César. C'est un énorme succès. Suivra ce Topaze en 1952 puis la trilogie des Souvenirs d'enfance entre 1958 et 1965 en ayant donné auparavant nombre d'affiches de ses films : sa célèbre trilogie La Fille du puisatier La Femme du boulanger Topaze La Gloire de mon père Le Château de ma mère Le Temps des secrets Merlusse Angèle Naïs. À l'issue de la parution de la deuxième trilogie en 1958 Pagnol aura ces mots : « Mon cher Albert J'admire notre livre. C'est une très belle réussite et je crois que tu es arrivé au sommet de ton talent. Tes couleurs sont aussi belles aussi originales que ton dessin. Tu es sans aucun doute le plus grand illustrateur de notre temps et ton trait est incomparable. Une sûreté une force et une finesse qui font penser aux plus grands asiatiques. . Un régal pour l'oeil Albert tu es le roi. » Lettre de Pagnol à Dubout Cagnes 20 mars 1959. Il est joint un certificat daté et signé du 23 avril 2021 de Didier Dubout petit-fils et ayant-droit de son grand-père certifiant que l'exemplaire faisait bien partie de la bibliothèque personnelle d'Albert Dubout et « qu'il s'agit du seul envoi connu de la famille de Marcel Pagnol à Albert Dubout ». Un second exemplaire sur une oeuvre commune est néanmoins apparu depuis mis à la connaissance de la famille : la première édition de Marius illustrée par Dubout à la Libération en 1945 qui porte cet envoi : « pour mon cher Albert Dubout avec mon affection et mon admiration son ami Marcel Pagnol » Ainsi qu'une édition d'un texte seul celui de La Gloire de mon père et Le Château de ma mère avec ces envois : « pour mon cher Albert avec mon affection Marcel Pagnol 1957 » ; « pour Albert Dubout hommage au travailleur !
