A small former bookstore sticker is on the back flyleaf page.</p><p>A true first edition of Hemingway's controversial post-WWII novel Across the River and Into the Trees. Published in 1950 by Charles Scribner's Sons this is the first printing with the Scribner "A" and seal on the copyright page.</p><p>This VG copy features the original unclipped dust jacket showing the $3.00 price. Jacket displays light edgewear with notable chipping to spine ends and corners as commonly seen. The first chapter opens on the last day in the life of protagonist Colonel Richard Cantwell who is duck hunting in Trieste. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman Renata and about his life as a soldier during the war. In Italy Hemingway had met a young woman Adriana Ivancich with whom he was infatuated and he used as the model for the female character in the novel. A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. Ernest Hemingway 1899 - 1961 was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. In a green cloth binding with an embossed cover design. Externally smart. Some light shelfwear to the boards with light discolouration to the extremities and some sunning to spine. Dustwrapper generally sound with some wear and browning to the extremities and some loss to spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean throughout.
