1927341756Dijjon: Maurice Darantiere 1927. Softcover. Fair. First edition. 12mo. 92pp. Paper wrappers. Fair only with chipped front wrapper that has been professionally restored extensive chipping at the spine and first six pages also chipped. The first issue of Pound's short-lived literary magazine that includes "Part of Canto XX" a poem from Ernest Hemingway and contributions from Richard Aldington Guy Hickok and John Rodker. Interestingly Hemingway's name is mistakenly listed as "E.W. Hemingway" on the cover when his middle name was Miller and his one-line poem "Neo-Thomist" is also misspelled and hand corrected by Pound in each of the 500 copies that were printed. Laid in is a postcard advertising the magazine and a small slip from New York newspaper man John M. Price. He not only inspired Pound to start the magazine but was in charge of distributing the first issue in States and seeking out contributions for future issues. Maurice Darantiere unknown

Written in 1939 and finished in 1940 the first edition was published in October of that year with a print run of 75000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery deception love and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. Were it not for the war and politics of the time this novel would have been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 - as the jurors voted unanimously in favor of the award.

Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. In 1933 Hemingway and Pfeiffer would go on safari to Kenya where Hemingway got much of the material he would use to write "Green Hills of Africa".

"Green Hills of Africa" would be published first in serialization from May to November of 1935 before being published officially in October of the same year. Hemingway's second non-fiction work it would initially receive a cool reception though days and weeks after would come to receive more glowing reviews for its novel writing. Despite then and today being regarded as a magnificent work of nonfiction writing Hemingway would blame the books poor sales on initial bad reviews and the stories influenced by the women in his life. 1390168. 51-4479Bahia Honda Cuba: July 10 1961. Als. 265 x 185mm. sheet size. Letter from Hemingway's son Gregory following the death of his father on July 2 1961 asking "To Whom it May Concern" to help Roberto Herrera Hemingway's friend and secretary in settling the estate.Gregory Hancock Hemingway November 12 1931 – October 1 2001 also known as Gloria Hemingway in later life was the third and youngest child of author Ernest Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer. The tragic death in 2001 of Ernest Hemingway's son revealed him/her to have long been addicted to fetishistic transvestism. At some point Gregory had one breast implanted and later on underwent SRS. However he only occasionally dressed as a woman in public and was referred to by the Hemingway family as Gregory rather than Gloria or Vanessa names he sometimes used when dressed as a female. Even after SRS he usually appeared in public as a man as in this photo with his wife Ida in 1999. Such is often the case when a fetishistic man undergoes SRS but doesn't have any deep need to take on a female social role. For more about other cases of such transition failures after SRS.In the course of his first four marriages Gregory Hemingway had eight children: Patrick Edward Sean Brendan Vanessa Maria John and Lorian. One of his marriages to Valerie Danby-Smith Ernest Hemingway's secretary lasted almost 20 years Gregory's fourth marriage to Ida Mae Galliher ended in divorce in 1995 after three years though they continued to live together and remarried in 1997.ASSOCIATED PRESS October 4 2001 MIAMI - Novelist Ernest Hemingway's troubled youngest son died of natural causes in a jail cell. He was 69.Gregory Hemingway a former doctor also known as Gloria Hemingway was found dead at 5:45 a.m. Monday said Janelle Hall a spokeswoman for the county corrections department. He had been arrested last week at least his third arrest in the county. He often dressed as a woman and Hall said jail officials had classified him as a woman and believe he had undergone a sex change operation. He died in the women's section of the jail.Police said family members whose names they did not make public confirmed the deceased was Ernest Hemingway's son.The elder Hemingway killed himself in 1961. A book Gregory Hemingway wrote about his father "Papa: A Personal Memoir" was published in 1976. It had a preface by Norman Mailer.Roberto Herrera Sotolongo Hemingway's friend and personal secretary whom Hemingway met in 1942 when Herrera became a crewmember aboard ''Pilar'' at the height of World War II when Hemingway patrolled the Gulf Stream for German submarines for the U.S. government. After Hemingway's death in 1961 Herrera was appointed to represent his affairs in Cuba including the deeding of the property and contents of ''Il Finca Vigia'' to the Cuban people ''as a place of opportunity for wider education and research to be maintained in his memory.'' The property became a museum and Herrera acted as its Conservator until his death in 1970. The candid photo is of two men on the veranda of Hemingway's Havana home Finca La Vigia.Herrera was Hemingway’s friend personal secretary and manager of Finca La Vigia Hemingway’s Cuban property. Herrera and Hemingway became good friends while sharing their mutual interests in hunting fishing aboard the “Pilar†and drinking at their favorite bar La Floridita in Havana. They also attended bullfights together and Herrera an avid photographer captured many photos and movies of all these activities. Hemingway called Herrera “El Monstruo†the Monster and signed much of his correspondence to Herrera “Mr. Papaâ€. By the mid-1940s Hemingway was travelling extensively and for long periods of time leaving his Cuban home Finca La Vigia Lookout Farm in the hands of Herrera. After Hemingway’s 1961 suicide Herrera was appointed to represent Hemingway’s affairs in Cuba including the deeding of the property and contents of “Finca La Vigia†to the Cuban people “as a place of opportunity for wider education and research to be maintained in his memory.†The property became a museum and Herrera acted as Conservator until his death in 1970.Ernest Hemingway son fils Gregory ; son secrétaire Roberto Herrera .Provenance: Estate of Roberto Herrera to SAS Signatures Paris.Expertise by Thierry BODIN Syndicat Français des Experts Professionnels en Å’uvres d’Art Librairie Les Autographes 45 rue de l’Abbé Grégoire 75006 PARIS Bahia Honda, Cuba: July 10, [1961] unknown

1939187Moscow: Goslitizdat 1939. 656 pp. 174x12 cm. In original cloth. Near fine.

This is the first edition of the play The Fifth Column and anthology of the writings by Ernest Hemingway first published in
1938. The original edition was of forty-nine stories which was also the title. A few less sufficient stories were not included in this edition and two essays on the Spanish Civil War were added written in 1937 and 1938 as well as the last written story On the American Dead in Spain 1939.

The Spanish Civil War strengthened Hemingway's reputation and authority in USSR. In 1930s everyone knew he was writing a new novel For Whom the Bell Tolls a great amount of fans were waiting for a new book. But the translation came only 28 years later because 1930s were the years of increasing vigilance and intolerance to ideological 'flaws' of Western writers. Nevertheless this play and stories were published a year after the original publication.

WorldCat locates only one copy in University at Albany Library. Goslitizdat unknown

199013714New York: Limited Editions Club 1990. Limited Edition. Oblong folio 81pp. illustrated with five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt. A fine copy in the publisher's beige canvas cloth and blue calf spine titled in silver. This is number 357 of 600 limited copies SIGNED by Eisenstaedt In the publisher's black clamshell box lined with blue suede. Box with some gentle uneven sun-fading endemic to most copies it seems but still quite lovely. Note that one of the illustrations in this copy was bound up-side down by the publisher. Priced just a little below market value for this reason. Eisenstaedt's images which are reprinted here from the original negatives were first used in the 1952 Life Magazine publication of the novel which slightly preceded the publication in book form. The high-quality photogravure reproductions and the thick Arches paper do far more justice to the images than the original thin glossy magazine paper.

Of the more recent large-format Limited Editions Club books this one strikes us as one of the few bargains to be had in the secondary market. A beautiful production. Limited Editions Club unknown
