192825030608New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1928. Hardcover. Very good /good. Fifth or sixth printing both had title pages dated 1928 twelvemo size 244 pp. in publisher's jacket. Ernest Miller Hemingway 1899-1961 won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Among other work he published seven novels six short story collections and two non-fiction works; many of this works are considered classics of American Literature. Hemingway has become in the minds of many the "man's man" who loved to fight and considered mountaineering bullfighting and car racing the only "true" sports. Hemingway's life had far too many twists and turns to recount here; a brilliant and complicated man he has left a literary heritage of incredible depth; his biographer stated that "he left stories and novels so starkly moving that some have become part of our cultural heritage".

This work "Men Without Women" was an immediate publishing success. Within two weeks of its release in 1927 with the title page dated 1927 7300 copies had sold; by the end of 1927 there were four separate printings that year each with the title page dated 1927 over 13000 copies had sold. The 1928 date on our title page was used for both the fifth and sixth printings; the seventh printing would not come out until 1932 n.b. this information from Grissom see "Citation" below.

___DESCRIPTION: Black cloth binding over boards gold paper labels mounted on the front and spine with letters and ruled borders in black top edge of text block appears to have originally been stained red now faded fore-edge uncut endpapers which match the dust jacket design title page with silhouetted bull in black circle; binding twelvemo size 7 5/8" by 5 1/4" pagination: i-xii 1-232. The dust jacket is unclipped and shows the original $2.00 price jacket design "D" per Grissom which was first used on a 1927 printing.

___CONDITION: Volume better than very good the binding clean the gold paper labels clean and without rubbing straight corners just beginning to rub a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; very light wear to the front joint light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine offsetting to the endpapers the front endpaper with a few miniscule specks. The unclipped dust jacket is good only; while complete there is overall edgewear including small loss at both the head and tail and small chips where the flaps meet the panels the spine is sunned and while the panels flaps and spine are all still attached the brittle paper has caused creasing where each piece meets the other.

___CITATION: Grissom no. A finely bound copy of this lesser known satirical novel by great American author Ernest Hemingway the second edition. The second edition of this work which was first published in 1926.Smartly rebound in a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards.A lesser known work of Ernest Hemingway this novella was written as a parody of 'Dark Laughter' by Sherwood Anderson.Hemingway takes a satirical look at pretentious writers in this novel and in its publication. He wrote it in only ten days and received a mixed reaction when first published partly as it was published in the same year as 'The Sun Also Rises'.'The Torrents of Spring' follows two men who work at a pump factory in the interwar era. Both men are searching for the perfect women the novel following a series of their failed loves as they each try to find their ideal woman. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally fine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned as is usual and clean with a few spots to the first few pages. Near Fine Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
195290629New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. 21 x 14.5 cm. Octavo. 140pp. Blue cloth in dust jacket. First printing with Scribner's "A" and seal on copyright page. Dust jacket is price clipped. Chip out of jacket spine and small closed tear. Small stain on back of jacket. Book itself in very nice condition with a bit of rubbing at the top and bottom of the jacket. Hanneman's bibliography mentions two variants of the jacket with a blue and olive tone to the photo of Hemingway and the blue toned one being issued first. This jacket looks to be one of the blue toned issues. The newer bibliography by Grissom says that the jacket flaps in the first state jacket were brown and changed to black with the second state. This copy has brown text on the flaps indicating a Grissom's 1st state jacket. No mention of Hemingway's Nobel Prize on the jacket which was apparently added in Grissom's third state. An excellent example.

The UK edition preceded the the US edition by four days.

"Across the River and Into the Trees first appeared in Cosmopolitan CXXVIII Feb. 1950 - June 1950. Numerous changes additions and omissions were made prior to book publication. For example: "Conte Carlo" was changed to "Count Andrea"; the passages regarding "the Honorable Pacciardi" on pp. 39-41 were added; the passages regarding d'Annunzio on pp. 49-51 were added; the whole of Ch. XXXVII was added; the deletions were filled in; etc.

Across the River and Into the Trees appeared on the N.Y. Times Book Review's Best Seller List from September 24 1950 to February 11 1951. During the twenty-one weeks that it appeared it was in first place for seven weeks from October 15 to November 26 1950. Twenty-five "advance copies" issued in blue cloth were printed from discarded plates after the first edition was run off. These "advance copies" contain the following errors: On p.21 line 26 "Papadopohi" should read "Papadopoli". On p. 24 line 5 there should be a period after "got" and "o" made a capital in "One". On p. 80 line 21 the second "how" should be omitted." Hanneman pp. 61-62.

Ernest Hemingway 1899 - 1961. Across the River and Into the Trees was his last novel and tells the story of American Colonel Richard Cantwell during the last day of his life as he recalls his experiences in war and love as a younger man in Venice. Hemingway took the title of this novel from the last words of General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson quoted on page 307: "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees." Like much of his writing this novel is highly autobiographical. Also in typical Hemingway fashion Across the River utilizes the Iceberg Theory in which the true essence of the story is not expressly said in the plot but rather is meant to be inferred.

Hanneman 23A.
