19357651New York: Charles Scribner 1935. 1st. Cloth. Good/Good. An unusual copy of the 1935 1st edition 2nd state without the "A" on the copyright page. From the personal library of noted literary critic Maxwell Geismar who among other things wrote the Introduction to Eldridge Cleaver's "Soul on Ice". Geismar has heavily highlighted this copy --clearly his working copy-- in color pencil and has made several extensive margin notes. A fascinating glimpse into the working methods of a major mid-century American critic. A presentable "starter" copy to boot. The boards are relatively clean the binding solid the dustjacket --in spite of a few chips and some creasing-- is 95% present.

Charles Scribner hardcover books

Tight and VG with bright gilt-titling along the spine and rubbed lettering to the front panel. Offsetting at the inner hinges and a very small amount of staining/soiling to the margins of several of the preliminaries. And in a bright price-intact VG- dustjacket with a degree of creasing and soiling to tha panels closed tears along the front flap and the front spine hinge and fairly sizeable abrading affecting some of the text at the front flap itself. Still though attractive and a very suitable "starter" copy.

Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books
1929119033New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1929. First edition of this early Hemingway classic which established him among the American masters. Octavo original black cloth and bronze title labels to the spine and front panel. With the legal disclaimer on the verso of the dedication page. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield--weary demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion--this gripping semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books

Spine somewhat worn. Internally fresh. First edition first issue with the Scribner’s “A†on the copyright page. Regarded as one of Hemingway’s finest works this novel has been adapted to film television and music. It follows the harrowing war-time tale of Robert Jordan a young American dynamiter deployed during the Spanish Civil War. This novel was unanimously nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 but its recommendation was overridden by Columbia University President Nicholas Murray Butler citing the book as offensive resulting in the first year that no Pulitzer Prize was awarded to a novel.

Hemingway 1899-1961 a prominent literary voice of the twentieth century drew inspiration from the famed “Lost Generation†ex-patriate community their influence apparent in many of his works. He produced some of American literature’s most read and celebrated pieces including The sun also rises The old man and the sea and A farewell to arms among many others. His legacy goes beyond merely the works that he produced; his writing and lifestyle have arguably become engrained in the history of American culture. Charles Scribner’s Sons unknown
