19751375Durham: Duke UP 1975. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. The dedication copy inscribed by the editor to his parents below their names on the dedication page: "With love Jack." The bookplate of Jackson Benson's mother Freda Sperling Benson is on the front pastedown. Benson provides the introduction and the final overview chapter "Ernest Hemingway as Short Story Writer." Benson was for 31 years a professor of American Literature at San Diego State University and among other books he was the author of the acclaimed authorized biographies The True Adventures of John Steinbeck Writer 1984 which won the PEN-WEST USA award for non-fiction; and Wallace Stegner: His Life and Work which won the Evans Biography Award. His first book was Hemingway: The Writer's Art of Self-Defense and this collection of essays for leading critics was his second. "A Comprehensive Checklist of Hemingway Short Fiction Criticism Explication and Commentary" is at rear. A copy that would be fine apart from a bump to the upper corners namely the rear corner where it's affected the tips of some late pages; also some offsetting to front free endpaper and a paperclip impression on the dedication page. Thus very good or better. Without a dust jacket. A great association copy for the collection of a Hemingway devotee. Duke UP hardcover

1927002340New York: Literary Guild of America 1927. Book. Fine. Hardcover. Reprint. This Literary Guild of America reprint edition was published in the same year as the 1st Edition. This copy is almost 100 years old has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The buckram covered boards high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends.
