Purportedly the 2nd issue with the blank --rather than the pictorial-- endpapers. This copy though includes its fragile and uncommon original dustjacket. Tight and Near Fine to Fine in a crisp example of the unprinted glassine jacket with a clean thin tear running across the front panel and light chipping at the panel edges. The jacket is 95% complete and surely accounts for the superb condition of the book itself. 12mo Introduction by Jasper Wood the illustrations woodblocks --or linocuts by Frederick K. Russell. This deeply political work --set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War-- is essentially dedicated by Hemingway to John Dos Passos Lillian Hellman and Archibald MacLeish. <br/><br/> The J.B. Includes the "95 Cent" price on the front dustjacket flap and the orignal pictorial cover by "Wuyts". Solid and VG in its light-blue cloth with light spotting to the front panel and light staining along its top-edge. And in a bright Good only dustjacket with notable chipping at the front panel's top-edge and lighter chipping to the spine ends. Also the spine and front panel are cleanly separated from the rear panel but seamlessly hold together in a tight mylar covering. A solid presentable copy of the 1937 correct 1st edition with the the letter 'A' and the Scribner colophon to the copyright page. Tight and VG with bright gilt-titling along the spine and rubbed lettering to the front panel. Offsetting at the inner hinges and a very small amount of staining/soiling to the margins of several of the preliminaries. And in a bright price-intact VG- dustjacket with a degree of creasing and soiling to tha panels closed tears along the front flap and the front spine hinge and fairly sizeable abrading affecting some of the text at the front flap itself. Tall 8vo. 53 1 pp. Photographic portrait of Faulkner mounted as frontispiece. Original printed wrappers the rear wrapper printing Ernest Hemingway's poem "Ultimately"; publisher's board slipcase. FIRST EDITION LIMITED ISSUE number 483 of 525 numbered copies. This was the first book issued by Milwaukee's Casanova Press designed by Paul Romaine who he states on the colophon "is obviously very unlike Aldus or Bodoni but who is very young and has many years to correct the glaring defects herein of composition." The articles and poems in Salmagundi first appeared in the New Orleans' magazine The Double Dealer and were reprinted with Faulkner's permission. The inclusion of Hemingway's poem on the rear wrapper was done as "just a whim" but "a whim inspired by one of the oddest coincidences in modern literature: William Faulkner's poem Portrait and Ernest Hemingway's poem Ultimately both appear on page 337 of the June 1922 issue of The Double Dealer. The meticulous Louis Cohn will be glad to know this I am sure since he forgot to include it in his complete bibliography of Hemingway's works. He also left out the names of the horses from whence came the glue to bind Hemingway's books" Preface. The screenplay was adapted from Hemingway's "worst book" in Hawks' estimation by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner the latter's participation making it the only film on which two winners of the Nobel Prize have ever collaborated. It was Bacall's debut film and where she and Bogart first met. <br/>Faulkner wrote the second revised final version of the script and was responsible for its change of setting from Cuba to Martinique. The top-grossing film of 1943 BELL was also used as a propaganda effort for the war effort as demonstrated by accompanying tickets. With a face value of $500 per ticket the event was designed to sell $1 million in war bonds in a single evening.
