Having revealed his perfect pitch and prodigious skill at the violin at a young age Elman studied at the Imperial Academy of Music then the St. Petersburg Conservatory and made his London debut in 1905. He moved to the US upon the outbreak of World War I and became an American citizen in 1923 recording and touring extensively throughout the country over the ensuing six decades.<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. Original quarter-green cloth over gray boards Arts & Crafts illust. on front cover of lighthouse in blue gray white & gilt gilt & black lettering minor soiling occasional paint marks numerous leaves w/ annotations corrections insertions still a VG copy w/ company bookplate on front pastedown of George L. Nagel and numbered. First edition of this exceedingly scarce counter display catalogue for this California paint & varnish company during the Roaring 20s. Founded originally in 1905 before the 1906 Earthquake and Fire Nagel notes in his introduction that this was intended to be a 20th anniversary catalogue presenting the company’s full line of paints varnishes and special coatings offered for sale. Hill Hubbell & Co. originally supplied marine paints and industrial paints and special paints for lighthouses and marine vessels and adopted the Lighthouse motif as their company logo and for paint marketing. They produced concrete paints paints for bridges oil tanks water tanks marine paints automotive paints varnishes for shingle roofs enamels glosses metal paints and much more. Of interest are the notes in the catalogue pointing out that 66 U.S. Navy destroyers were painted entirely with Hill Hubbell & Co. Biturine Enamel coated the Cambrian Reservoir in San Jose CA the pipes and other structures for the Hetch Hetchy Water Supply on the O’Shaughnessy Dam and many other projects in the West. Hill Hubbell & Co. along with the California Paint Co. Seattle Western Pacific Paint Corp. Rasmussen & Co. and others would all be later combined into the General Paint Corporation in Oct. 1928.
