193712825An extraordinary one-of-a-kind historic collectible beautifully framed.<br />This is the ORIGINAL Western Union Cablegrama dated and sent from Havana Cuba on April 8 1937 to General Franco Salamanca Spain. It is sent from Elicio Arguelles head of Franco's Nationalist Committee in Cuba to Franco in Salamanca. The message translates into English as follows:<br />THE SPANISH NATIONALIST COMMITTEE SENDS TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS AS MEDIATION FOR THOSE RECONQUERING SPANISH SOIL<br />What makes this unique piece truly extraordinary is that beneath the printed message written in ink in his instantly recognizable hand is a three-line notation:<br />"Salamanca" / Spain 1937 / Earnest Hemingway<br />The background is this: The sender Arguelles is the father of Hemingway's close friend of the same name Elicio Arguelles Jr. the fisherman in the famous photograph of himself standing beside Hemingway with the 900-pound Marlin they caught. As was customary at the time the sender also received a copy of the telegram. His copy went to the son who in turn gave it to Hemingway to sign.<br />This is an absolutely one-of-a-kind collectible of considerable historical significance. Page size: 7.5 x 8.25 inches; 24pp; colophon. Bound by the artist: hand-sewn in red linen thread brown paper wrappers that have been printed with overall pattern of deep brown and vertical rectangular image of matador standing and saluting the crowd with his red cape and sword in his hand on the front on gold gilt ground and a horizontal rectangle image of black bull on red ground housed in cover stock brown paper with block print of matador inserting two banderillas from the 2nd stage of the corrida into the bull's shoulders. The dramatic titlepage a block engraving printed in black and red is followed by an opening page spread that has the text starting "So I went to Spain." on the verso and an image of a bull and picador with the ensuing blood The text lines are curved following the block print lines. This is the relationship between each subsequent image and text page. The curving lines and bulls curving neck as well as the muleta are all intertwined to make striking images of the ritual that Hemingway describes as a tragedy. The artist's images are often stark bold and haunting. This Spanish spectacle is centuries old but is fast losing popular support. The sport in which it is certain that the bull dies is approaching its own demise. The shock of the corrida is aptly conveyed by Paul Maurer's images. The ambivalence of Hemingway's words "If I could have made this enough of a book it would have had everything in it." which is the last text page is indicative of another time. unknown books

First edition first printing of what is rumored to be Hemingway's first book from the original typescript dated 1921 which precedes the publication of Three Stories and Ten Poems in 1923 and published for the first time in 1978. Octavo original off-white buckram antique green endpapers title page in green and black. One of 73 copies hors-commerce numbered 1-73 this is number 24. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in the original antique green slipcase which is in fine condition. A superior example. "The carbon typescript of Hokum: A Play in Three Acts was authenticated by Professor Carlos Baker the definitive Hemingway scholar. The only fragment remaining of the original manuscript descended from Leicester Hemingway to the publisher. In the Quinlan papers at Yale is a letter from Hemingway to Grace Quinlan dated November 16 1920 stating in substance that he is writing a fifty-fifty collaboration with Musselman. Professor Baker also made note of a second letter from Musselman to Hemingway which states among other matters that they must get to work over the weekend to begin the third act of the play. The entire matter is discussed in the introduction to the present volume. At one time the book was banned in California but remains as Hemingway's first authored book" W. Young Banned in California.
