Jacket design by the great "Cleon". No "A" denoting first edition b/c the book was published by Scribner prior to 1930. Also lacks the legal disclaimer on page x. This true first edition and first state dust jacket were married.</p><p>The iconic dust jacket for the first U.S. edition of A Farewell to Arms 1929 was designed by artist and illustrator Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins who often signed her work simply as "Cleon."</p><p>Katharine Barclay" is misspelled on inside front jacket. Binding is cocked with an overbite. Rear hinge is cracked. Old bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown. Previous owner's signature on the front endpaper. Gilt label on spine is creased and has minimal paper loss. Minor sun fading on the spine. <br /> <br /> Early in 1918 Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian Red Cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During his time abroad Hemingway had two experiences that affected him profoundly and that would later inspire one of his most celebrated novels A Farewell to Arms. The first occurred on July 8 1918 when a trench mortar shell struck him while he crouched beyond the front lines with three Italian soldiers. Though Hemingway embellished the story over the years it is certain that he was transferred to a hospital in Milan where he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Scholars are divided over Agnes' role in Hemingway's life and writing but there is little doubt that his relationship with her informed the relationship between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms.
