1924022717NY: Thomas Selzer Inc. 1924. Book. VG. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 8vo. Entire issue Volume I Number V May - June 1924 in original wraps printed in blue light general wear-only overall very clean and bright with spine mildly darkened and a slight nick at spine tail both as noted in pictures; yapp ends fully intact with none of the usual chipping or tearing. An unusually nice copy. The author's non-fiction commentary on contemporary happenings in America including literary criticism. From the opening paragraph "An American citizen not yet 35 years old of French-German-Jewish parentage writing in the Paris Sunday Literary Supplement of the World's Greatest Newspaper under the name of Louis Gay says: 'Remember that less than twenty years ago the reading matter to be found in the home of the average American of means -- the American who sent his boys to college -- was composed almost entirely of the New England poets the Christian Register and the Youth's Companion.' As Mr. Gay is frequently denunciatory rarely unpersonal and always insistent on the lack of a cultural background of almost everyone of whom he writes the above selection from his article will have a certain biographical significance in the critical study of American Criticism which should be written to carry to its end the present phenomenon of American letters. For every writer produced in America there are produced eleven critics." Issue also includes Part II of Gertrude Stein The Making of Americans plus Ezra Pound William Carlos Williams Paul Morand A. E. Coppard Luke Ionides Catherine Wells Ethel Colburn Mayne D. Chaucer Ford Madox Ford R Edison Page C. A. Cingria Satie and Dyneley Hussey. See Hanneman C156. Very scarce. Thomas Selzer Inc. 443142Yale University Press. Hardcover. Fair. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This remarkable book is the first to examine in abundant detail the relation between visual artists and the American Communist movement during the twentieth century. Andrew Hemingway charts the rise and decline of the Communist Party's influence on art in the United States from the Party's dramatic rise in prestige during the Great Depression to its effective demise in the 1950s. Offering a full account of how left-wing artists responded to the Party's various policy shifts over these years Hemingway shows that the Communist Party exerted a powerful force in American culture even after the Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939.The author scrutinizes the works of an array of leftist artists many of great interest but largely forgotten today. He demonstrates that American art produced within the Communist Party's orbit was far more diverse and had a much more complex relationship with modernism than has been previously understood. Refusing to march in lockstep to Party requirements artists and critics in and around the Party accepted no single aesthetic line and engaged in heated debates. Hemingway offers radical new interpretations of some familiar works reassesses the role of the John Reed Clubs and the work of artists in the federal art programs and revises accepted thinking about art in the United States during the Cold War. In short he offers a distinguished and original political history that recovers the rich artistic and intellectual legacy of the American left.A hardback book in fair used condition some wear to the dust jacket and markings to the first few pages.
