1952179582New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1952. It is good that we do not have to try to kill the sun or the moon or the stars. It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers. First edition in a bright example of the first issue dust jacket illustrating the Cuban fishing village Cojímar. Hemingway wrote to the jacket designer Adriana Ivancich "if I could only have been there to celebrate with you when you had finished it. I think we have what triumphs we have at much too great a distance from each other". Hemingway's final work of fiction won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize and was cited for his receipt of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. The first issue dust jacket omits mention of these awards and has flaps printed in brown. Octavo. Original light blue calico-grain cloth spine lettered in silver author's signature stamped to front cover in blind. With dust jacket by Adriana Ivancich. Some faint marks to cloth slight rubbing to ends and corners ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper silver titles still bright; unclipped jacket bright minor rubbing to ends and corners trivial closed tear at foot of rear panel unclipped: a very good copy in near-fine jacket. 1975488Franklin Center Pa: The Franklin Library 1975. First. Hardback. Near Fine. Schwartz Daniel. As is typical of the limited editions produced by the Franklin Library this book is pure elegance. The binding is blue leather with gold stamping; the papers are made of moire fabric rather than of paper itself; all the page ends not just the tops are gilded; and there is a wide bound-in ribbon book mark. More than that the book is copiously illustrated with black and wash ink wash paintings and includes a color copy of a portrait of Ernest Hemingway painted by his friend Waldo Pierce in the 1920s. The portrait is tipped in on the page before the title page covered with a bound-in page of onion skin. According to the caption the original was a favorite of Hemingway's and hung in the house of his widow who made it available for reproduction for the first time for use in this book.

The text block of this copy is very tight so much so that it has the feel of a book that has never been read. There are no marks tears or folds on the pages. The spine has four raised bands with gold stamped decoration at the top and bottom with the author title and publisher stamped in gold in between. Both the front and back covers have gold stamped lines forming a border with a gold stamped lines forming a frame for a gold stamped image of a marlin leaping out of the ocean. There is some slight rubbing on the bottom edges of both covers and on all corners as well as on a few spots of the spine but otherwise this copy would be classified "as new." A welcome addition to any Hemingway or Franklin Library collection.

See our photos. The Franklin Library unknown

199013714New York: Limited Editions Club 1990. Limited Edition. Oblong folio 81pp. illustrated with five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt. A fine copy in the publisher's beige canvas cloth and blue calf spine titled in silver. This is number 357 of 600 limited copies SIGNED by Eisenstaedt In the publisher's black clamshell box lined with blue suede. Box with some gentle uneven sun-fading endemic to most copies it seems but still quite lovely. Note that one of the illustrations in this copy was bound up-side down by the publisher. Priced just a little below market value for this reason. Eisenstaedt's images which are reprinted here from the original negatives were first used in the 1952 Life Magazine publication of the novel which slightly preceded the publication in book form. The high-quality photogravure reproductions and the thick Arches paper do far more justice to the images than the original thin glossy magazine paper.

Of the more recent large-format Limited Editions Club books this one strikes us as one of the few bargains to be had in the secondary market. A beautiful production. Limited Editions Club unknown
