The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew Ryukyu in 1854 where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. Heine and Brown the artists may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view.The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew Ryukyu in 1854 where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew annexing the Islands in 1879. <br> <br>Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: “Picturesque crags studded the hillside…Over it towered a tall crag rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock like a ruined tower and on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay we found a handsome Cunq-qua in an enclosure planted with trees.
