Large 4to. 31.5 by 24 cm. 83 2 pp. With 35 lithographic plates six of which are hand-colored and nine of which are signed by Pascin. Also signed by him on the limitation page. The cover also has a partly colored illustration by Pascin done on the vellum. This book was Pascin's first book project. The satirical Heine novel first published in 1833 actually was the inspiration for Wagner's "Der Fliegende Hollander" or "The Flying Dutchman". Pascin was born in Bulgaria was active in Paris for much of his career although becoming an American citizen and working in the U.S. as well. The illustrations in this book have a deliberately naive quality almost as if done by a child. Condition: short tear of vellum along lower front joint 2 to 3 cm in length. Typical yet slight bowing of the vellum and a touch of lifting of the vellum from the boards. Minor darkening of the vellum leaves within along the edges. Paul Cassirer unknown

1920131Very Good Copy of second German edition of Heinrich Heine's satirical novella with original boards and a cover drawing by Jules Pascin important Bulgarian-born Expressionist painter with more than 20 illustrations by Pascin. In glassine cover with some soiling on cover. Bright and clean inside. Born Julius Mordechai Pincas Jules PASCIN 1885-1930 was one of the most important artists of the École de Paris. He arrived in France in 1905 year of the birth of <i>Fauvisme </i> at the Salon d'Automne. He was Influenced by Fauvism and later by Cubism but mostly celebrated for his paintings of Montmartre life after dark. Among his models were his wife Hermine David and his mistress Lucy and prostitutes encountered in bordellos. He exhibited his works regularly at the <i>Salon des Indépendants.</i> He committed suicide en 1930. The day of his death the Parisian Art Galleries closed as a sign of mourning. <br /> Paul Cassirer hardcover

The drawing as per the illustration within a drawn frame is slightly larger than the lithograph version the drawn frame is 178 x 178 mm while the printed version is 146 x 146 mm and in addition also features at upper right a tiny remarque in watercolour: the head of a mouse peeking out of a hole to observe the events of the drawing.'Pascin's first book illustrations.
