Livre-clé pour comprendre la genèse de La Recherche l'ouvrage rassemble l'essai longtemps inédit où Proust règle ses comptes avec la « méthode » Sainte-Beuve et ce faisant dégage sa propre poétique. Au tournant 1907-1908 revenu de Cabourg et profitant d'un répit de santé Proust délaisse un premier chantier romanesque - le cycle des « 75 feuillets » en réalité 76 vaste ébauche en six ensembles « Une soirée à la campagne » « Le côté de Villebon et le côté de Méséglise » « Séjour au bord de la mer » « Jeunes filles » « Noms nobles » « Venise » - pour lancer d'abord pour Le Figaro un texte « contre Sainte-Beuve » qui enfle en quelques mois jusqu'à former un essai de près de trois cents pages qu'il gardera inédit. Sous la forme d'une conversation à voix basse avec sa mère l'auteur y entremêle souvenirs portraits pages de lecture et méditation critique. Le coeur de la thèse est net : refuser l'enquête biographique comme clef des oeuvres et exiger qu'on juge un texte par sa nécessité formelle et son style. Il fait lire les premières pages à Reynaldo Hahn en novembre 1909 puis propose l'ensemble au Mercure de France à la mi-août 1909 non sans prévenir de passages qu'ils jugent lui-même impossibles à donner à lire : « Contre Sainte-Beuve Souvenir d'une matinée est un véritable roman et extrêmement impudique en certaines parties. Un des principaux personnages est un homosexuel » lettre à Alfred Valette directeur du Mercure de France publiée par Florence Callu dans le Bulletin de la Bibliothèque nationale en mars 1980. Alfred Valette avait déjà refusé les Pastiches. Proust note Jean-Yves Tadié « ne peut concevoir que l'on refuse son livre pour d'autres raisons que pour son immoralité » Proust « Introduction générale » p. XLII. Le texte est à nouveau refusé et Proust le recompose en nommant le dernier cahier « Sainte-Beuve » qu'il souhaite voir ouvrir À la recherche du temps perdu et l'invitation « à une soirée » qui clôt ces pages deviendra la fameuse « matinée » bien connue. In fine le texte liminaire ne sera pas intégré et Proust gardera l'intégralité du texte inédit. C'est grâce aux recherches et découvertes de Bernard de Fallois qui fit surgir manuscrits et dactylogrammes que l'édition peut enfin paraître en 1954 et restituer l'acte fondateur par lequel Prous conteste le positivisme biographique et affirme son immense sensibilité critique.
