Rousseau beteiligte sich vermutlich auch auf Anregung seiner Philosophenfreunde der Enzyklopädie hin und erhielt 1750 den ersten Preis. Jean-Jacques Rousseau 1712 - 1778 was a Genevan philosopher writer and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political sociological and educational thought. His novel mile: or On Education is a treatise on the education of the whole person for citizenship. His sentimental novel Julie ou la nouvelle Hlose was of importance to the development of pre-romanticism and romanticism in fiction. Rousseau's autobiographical writings - his Confessions which initiated the modern autobiography and his Reveries of a Solitary Walker - exemplified the late 18th-century movement known as the 'Age of Sensibility' featuring an increasing focus on subjectivity and introspection that has characterised the modern age. His Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and his On the Social Contract are cornerstones in modern political and social thought. Rousseau was a successful composer of music. He wrote seven operas as well as music in other forms and he made contributions to music as a theorist. During the period of the French Revolution Rousseau was the most popular of the philosophes among members of the Jacobin Club. Rousseau a Freemason was interred as a national hero in the Panthon in Paris in 1794 16 years after his death. With previous owner's bookplates to front pastedown of fourteen volumes. In full calf bindings. Externally generally sound but with wear to extremities rubbing and marks and the occasional stain to boards. 176289002Amsterdam: Jean Néaulme 1762. Fine. Jean Néaulme Amsterdam 1762 9.5 x 17 cm In-12 4 volumes reliés First duodecimo edition or first edition in 12mo format illustrated with five fine plates by Eisen including two in the first volume and one frontispiece in each of the remaining three. Title pages printed in red and black. As expected the first volume has no half-title unlike the other three volumes.Contemporary full mottled calf binding. Smooth spines richly decorated. Tan morocco title and volume labels. Blue sprinkled edges. Small loss at the head of volume III short wormtrack at the head of volume I rubbing marks. Loss to the lower margin corner of the final leaf of volume I. A handsome copy. According to McEachern Bibliography of the writings of J.J. Rousseau this edition was printed before the original octavo edition published by Duchesne although it was released after the octavo. After signing a contract with the Maréchale de Luxembourg for the publication rights to Émile Duchesne reached an agreement in November 1761 with the publisher Jean Néaulme for an edition to be published outside France. He first printed the Dutch edition which was in fact printed in Paris with Amsterdam as the place of publication and then reimposed these volumes in octavo format with The Hague as the place of publication. This edition should not be confused with the counterfeit dated 1762 which has a different collation. However it is noteworthy that this 12mo edition does not contain the same typographical errors as the octavo edition and it also presents several peculiarities noted by Rochebilière Bibliographie des éditions originales d'auteurs français.: in volume I page 10 of the octavo the word appears as L'essenciel while in the 12mo it is L'essentiel. It is known that Rousseau himself corrected proofs for the 12mo edition. It must therefore be assumed that the 12mo edition benefited from Rousseau's corrections whereas the octavo was printed directly from the uncorrected 12mo. Jean Néaulme unknown

The Traité also includes a discussion of the history of the viol in France which provides valuable information on construction techniques; Rousseau also mentions Thomas Young Henry Butler and John Price and the influence of the English viol school on French musicians. The discussion of technique and bowing is the most thorough before Loulié and in the discussion of ornamentation Rousseau draws upon the lute tradition as well as encouraging the adoption of conventions from vocal music." 1783149924London: Printed for J. Bew 1783. Rare first edition in English of the author's classic work. Duodecimo 2 volumes bound in three-quarters contemporary calfskin over marbled boards with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in five compartments within raised bands morocco spine labels. In very good condition signatures to the front pastedowns. First published in 1783 four years after Rousseau's death his Confessions is notable as one of the first major autobiographies. Prior to the Confessions the two great autobiographies were Augustine's own Confessions and Saint Teresa's Life of Herself. Providing an account of the experiences that shaped Rousseau's personality and ideas the work was also noted for its detailed account of Rousseau's more humiliating and shameful moments. Founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell his second wife Vera Mendel and their mutual friend David Garnett The Nonesuch Press was established in the basement of Garnett's bookshop in Soho. Nonesuch was unusual among private presses in that it used a small hand press to design books and then had them printed by commercial printers. Among the press's best-known editions were the collected works of William Congreve and William Wycherley and translations of Cervantes and Dante. Printed for J. Bew hardcover

1782168228Geneva i.e. Neuchâtel: Société typographique de Neuchâtel 1782. Setting "new standards of frankness and self-revelation" Second large-type edition of the first part of one of the greatest autobiographies in any language a milestone of enduring influence on the genre. This edition was printed in Neuchâtel a line-for-line contrefaçon of the first edition published in Geneva by the Société typographique de Genève; it can be distinguished by a variant title page ornament. The Confessions had an enormous influence on the development of the autobiography in Europe. "Not only did it set new standards of frankness and self-revelation: its subject was quite new the formation and analysis of a mind and personality. Just as significantly it emphasised for the first time the importance and interest of childhood" Leigh p. 133. The edition includes the Reveries du Promeneur Solitaire Reveries of the Solitary Walker Rousseau's autobiographical meditations occasioned by his walks on the outskirts of Paris also first published in the Geneva first edition of the Confessions. The Geneva edition appeared in April 1782; by May there were multiple piracies in different formats. The original Geneva and this contrefaçon edition are both deemed as the only "large-type editions" by Leigh. Of the various piracies this is the most significant and well-documented: "the most interesting perhaps is the handsome octavo contrefaçon produced by the Société typographique de Neuchâtel. the Société received their copy of the Geneva edition about 8 April 1778 from Barthélemy Chirol a Genevan bookseller. For obvious reasons they couldn't order it direct. They began work at once in the week ending 13 April. Printing was finished in the week ending 18 May 1782. The accounts are so detailed that we know the names of the compositors and the press-men and the dates when the individual sheets came off the presses. This contrefaçon is such a close imitation of the large-type octavo produced by the Société typographique de Genève that it has often been mistaken for it" Leigh p. 136. All of these 1782 editions comprise books 1-6. A further two volumes of Confessions comprising books 7-12 were left unpublished due to their concern with living persons. They were intended to remain unpublished until the next century but one of the executors sold the manuscript for publication to a different publisher in 1789. The gap in publication and the unauthorized nature of the latter books ensures they are not often found together. 2 vols octavo 192 x 118 mm. Contemporary marbled calf red and green morocco labels gilt in compartments marbled endpapers red edges. A little rubbed with a couple of trivial chips at extremities slight superficial splits to joints contents clean; a very good copy. R. A. Leigh Unsolved Problems in the Bibliography of J.-J.
