Except for a tiny bit of chipping to the spine crown of Vol. 4 all volumes clean and bright and VG or better with very light inoffensive foxing to the preliminaries and along the text of several of the volumes. A beautifully-illustrated example of mid-20th century French book-making with Paul Baudier's 23 lovely watercolors complementing Jean-Jacques Rousseau's text which was originally published in 1802. This lavish 1957 reprint consists of only 150 copies this being #11 of only 50 copies within the larger limitation of 150. Crisp and bright and Near Fine with all of the plates including their original tissue-guards. Loose signatures as issued housed within an off-white printed dustjacket which shows just a touch of very light white spotting at the panels. And the entire work housed inside of the publisher's printed cardboard chemise which shows a degree of wear along the outer hinges. Title pages printed in red and black with engraved ornaments. 12 full-page engraved plates illustrating the letters. Contemporary calf red edges; clean; calf slightly scuffed. First Edition. Rousseaus epistolary novel later known as Julie or the New Héloïse was first published in 1761 by Marc-Michel Rey in Amsterdam. The novels title translated Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps is a nod to the history of Héloïse dArgenteuil and Pierre Abélard a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was initially put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. <br/><br/>Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel a philosophical theory about authenticity namely secret principles and feelings and being constituent of ones core identity permeated through it. Rousseau explored autonomy and authenticity as moral values and in turn created in Julie a story of temptation sin and redemption that was easily relatable. According to Historian Robert Darnton there were at least 70 editions in print before 1800. So immensely popular publishers could not print copies fast enough so they rented the book out by the day and even by the hour. The work stirred a strong emotional response from readers and had raised Rousseau to prominence as an author. Worldcat locates 6 copies of this edition in North America. This set of plates was intended to illustrate Linnaeus's System of Vegetables and Particularly Adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany in the University of Cambridge". All hand-colored plates present and one folding table. These plates by F.P. Nodder were not included with the first or second editions. They were later published to be added to the those editions and subsequent editions making them the first edition of plates with text.
