It derived from Restif de la Bretonne. While the illustrations in the set are at times a bit naughty the old term would be “with curious plates†we didn’t notice any untoward depictions of feet. A limited edition of one-thousand copies of which this is numbered five.Bound by Hatchards.'Sara' is an episode of the extraordinary autobiography of Nicolas Restif de la Bretton. His work 'Monsieur Nicolas' was originally published across sixteen volumes from 1794-97 and explores hif life in great detail such as his ethical and social beliefs his sexual awakenings and his hatreds. This volume focuses on his love with the young daughter of his landlady named Sara - he was in his 40s and she in her teens - and the two began a short-lived relationship. Sara inspired his writing 'La Dernière Aventure d'un homme de quarante-cinq ans'.Illustrated with a frontispiece.Bookplate of Scottish bibliophile Alexander Stone to the front paste down.From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex which became home to his library one the largest private libraries in England.
