Originally published by the National Temperance Society and Publication House and then subsequently printed by the Right Worthy Grand Lodge Independent Order Good Templars with the first mention in Godly's Lady Book and Magazine July 1884 page 101 Acknowledgments section. Book exterior shows soiling and spotting corners are softened. No hinge cracks noted. Title page has small flaw in paper above the word temperance and the title but appears like a closed tear but does not show on the other side of the page. Foxing also noted and pages are toned. Original owner's name and information written on front pastedown. The original owner and signature belongs to Lavinia Hauke Engle - who was the mother of Lavinia Margaret Engle an American suffragette and politician. Lavinia Hauke Engle was the first president of the Montgomery League of Women Voters and even testified before congress for women's suffrage with Susan B. Anthony. Book condition graded as good plus. This is a rare first edition of W R Richardson's light-hearted and witty account of a trip taken from London Bridge to Lombardy in Italy by train and coach describing how much easier it in in his day that his fore-fathers. He travels through Belgium Germany Switzerland Italy and France observing the locals their customs and art etc. The book is illustrated with a map of the route and smaller illustrations within the text by Sydney Prior Hall. Condition: A fair to good copy. The blue cloth is quite heavily rubbed with the heaviest at the spine ends and corners. The front hinge is cracked but secure school prize label to front pastedown. The main body of text is in good order with clean pages some light finger marking to the prelims and the inner binding is holding though pulled in a few places. Matt Ward was tried in the Hardin Circuit Court at Elizabethtown KY April 1854 for the murder of W. H. G. Butler. McDade explains: "Butler the principal of Louisville High School had whipped Matt Ward's younger brother. Matt demanded an apology of Butler not for the whipping but for calling the boy a liar. The apology not forthcoming words followed; and Ward having come prepared for blood shot Butler. Kentucky justice was that Ward was promptly acquitted" McDade 1042. Sabin 70981. D. An advertisement for Paine's Celery Compound the booklet was designed to bolster the sales of an already-popular quack remedy - the first ever celery-based product on the market. According to the "Encyclopedia of Pseudoscience" it was developed in the mid-1870s by the Wells Richardson & Company in Burlington - a partnership between several Civil War veterans. Apart from celery the recipe also contained hops alcohol and coca cocaine and purportedly offered permanent cure for all kinds of nervous diseases. Besides history and testimonials of the effectiveness of the compound the booklet listed and illustrated described the greatest crusades the great wonders of America the greatest ships and bridges etc. Quite unusual with OCLC showing only 4 holdings at institutions.
