It provides a short history of the subject "the lethal process" a table of anesthetic gases and vapors showing their chemical properties and 5 figures illustrating lethal chamber used in the euthanasia of animals. Richardson "spent many years in attempts to relieve pain among men by discovering and adapting substances capable of producing general or local anaesthesis and among animals by more humane methods of slaughter. He brought into use no less that fourteen anaesthetics of which methylene bichloride is the best known and he invented the first double-valved mouthpiece for use in the administration of chloroform. He also produced local insensibility be freezing the part with an ether spray and he gave animals euthanasia by means of a lethal chamber." DNB Vol. XXII Supplement p. 1170. Sir Benjamin Richardson contributed widely to the history of medicine whose important work Disciples of Aesculapius was published in 1900. Richardson was a staff journalist for the New York Daily Tribune whom was a secret correspondent in the Civil War. He was captured in 1863 and spent a year and a half in Confederate prisons. in 1864 he escaped from the Salisbury NC prison. While in prison his wife and infant daughter died. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a minor crack at the front hinge between the end paper and frontispiece resulting in the front cover being just a bit shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. The pages are lightly age-toned with occasional mild foxing; heavier foxing on the illustrated plates and on the frontispiece both sides the title page and the tissue guard in between. An old slip of paper containing a Christmas inscription has been adhered to the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good condition.</p> American Tract Society hardcover
