John Richardson medical officer of the Franklin expedition records the daily round of making camp collecting specimens and logging all observations. In July of 1821 the party reached the icy waters of the Arctic but it was far too late in the season. They attempted to return across the Barren Lands starving cold bedeviled by loss of men and equipment. Only nine of twenty men returned. For survival they turned to cannibalism. Richardson's journal of the first Franklin expedition is published here for the first time.
