Each volume admits to an ink-stamp to verso of title-page; else no other library treatments to volumes. Books are nicely and uniformly bound in original dark green cloth with gilt lettering to each spine. Volumes admit to several minor inoffensive bumps to extremities of covers and a small number of leaves. Deckle edges admit to just a few tiny discreet tears. Generally the volumes admit to just a touch of wear here and there while volume 2 admits to some light and largely inoffensive discoloration to cloth from - perhaps - mild contact with moisture. The marker-ribbon that allows for easy removal of the map is worn and though attached is fragile and likely to become detached at some point in the future. Photographs with occasional layout annotations on the versos. <br /> <br /> After a smash debut in London in 1957 at the Royal Court and Palace Theatres the play moved to the Royale Theatre on Broadway in 1958 where it ran for 97 performances between February 12 and May 10. <br /> <br /> Osborne's play written at the behest of Olivier was about an embittered middle-aged music hall performer named Archie Rice. Olivier's presence at the theatre which brought West End London notoriety to a playhouse associated with new and nontraditional drama made British theatre history. <br /> <br /> Photographs 8 x 10 inches. 1940148508Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures 1940. Vintage borderless photograph of Preston Sturges and Muriel Angelus on the set of the 1940 film. Mimeo snipe and "Paramount Photo by G.E. Richardson" stamp on verso. <br /> <br /> Sturges had become a very successful Hollywood screenwriter by the late 1930s and with his screenplay for "The Biography of a Bum" wanted so much to direct the film that he offered to do the job for free. With very few exceptions notably Charlie Chaplin the notion of an established studio writer directing a film was nearly unheard of in Hollywood where writers were typically not even allowed on the set. Only the irresistible cheapness of Sturges' offer made it possible for the film to get made. <br /> <br /> Over the six year period during which the script remained unproduced the title changed to "The Vagrant" then "Down with McGinty" then finally just prior to production to "The Great McGinty." It was not only a success but won Sturges an Oscar for Best Screenplay. More importantly he was allowed to continue as a writer-director with a magnificent career that included one classic after another including "Sullivan's Travels" "The Lady Eve" "Unfaithfully Yours" "The Palm Beach Story" and "Hail the Conquering Hero."<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. Prepared by Wilkins and originally published in installments in the San Francisco call and post beginning April 22 1918. Recollections of his father William A. Richardson and his mother Maria Antonia daughter of Ignacio Martinez. William Antonio. Richardson arrived in San Francisco from England as a first mate aboard the whaler Orion. He remained at Yerba Buena was baptized a Catholic and married the daughter of presidio commandante Ingacio Martinez adopting her given name Maria Antonia as his middle one. Mariano Vallejo appointed him Captain of the Port in 1835 and he built the first habitation there a tent followed by a board house and finally an adobe in 1836. His large Rancho bordered on the bay named for him. These reminiscences by his son give wonderful first person accounts of the life of the Californians and the founding of San Francisco interaction with the native population the depredations of John Fremont the Vigilance Committee business and commerce etc. Does not appear to have been formally published in book format. . no publisher (c 1999) unknown
