18970489aNewcastle-upon-Tyne: Thomas & George Allan. G : in good condition without dust jacket. Cover rubbed marked. Occasional light foxing in margins. Fep creased. 1897. First Edition. Brown hardback cloth cover. 450mm x 340mm 18" x 13". 42 plates. 42 paper-guarded full-page engraved plates. 42 etchings from Richardson's original drawings. Many of these were originally intended to illustrate a history of the town by his brother Moses Aaron Richardson. The manuscript for that work however was never completed. Each of the engravings is accompanied by a brief piece on the subject matter. There is also a short biography of the artist and a list of the 1880 location of each original drawing. Thomas Miles Richardson 1784-1847 was born of an old Tynedale family who lived for generations in the neighbourhood of Wark. Evidence of his artistic talent led him to be placed at the age of fourteen with a Newcastle engraver. The latter died very shortly afterwards and effectively interrupted Richardson's artistic career. After a brief period as a cabinet-maker he succeeded his father to the mastership of St. Andrew's School Newcastle in 1806. He continued painting in his leisure time and seven years later left the school to devote himself full-time to painting. In 1822 together with the engraver Thomas Bewick and others Richardson inaugurated the first Fine Art Exhibition in the North of England. Twice married Richardson had a large family. His sons Thomas Miles jr. and Edward became notable artists in their own right. Heavy item - shipping supplement may apply for overseas. . Thomas & George Allan hardcover
