196529kxSociete des Oceanistes Paris ; Imprimerie Priester Paris 1965. Limited. Softcover. Fine/No Jacket. Dessirier Rene. Signed. 63 pages complete. Numbered 62 of a limited edition of 100 copies. In French and English. The book was designed by the Rev Father O'Reilly then Secretary General of the Societe Oceaniste. A beautiful book. A frontis woodcut of the Dolphin leaving Matavai Bay Tahiti from a maquette by the artist Rene Dessirier. This is signed by him. It is in wonderfully fresh condition. Precious little is known about Richardson or how - other than through a spirit of adventure and romance - came to be on the Dolphin. Certainly the poem is considered to be the first work of creative art inspired by Tahiti. Printed on laid paper. Binding is pleasingly stitched. The book is housed in a marbled board slipcase and portfolio-style casing. The slipcase has some wear tanning and scuffing about the edges faces. It is sturdy and sure. The casing is fresh neat unblemished elegant. The book's card covers are simple chic. They have some very little wear about the edges. Otherwise they are tidy and assured. The contents are exceptionally gratifying. They are very clean very clear fresh-faced very healthy and confidently engaging - as if new throughout! 1995BIBLIO-15849Antique Collectors' Club Woodbridge first edition 1995. Cloth 4to 28 cm. 595 pp. 11000 entries. Text volume only there was a separate volume of illustrations. The author's introduction to this revised and enlarged third edition comments; "Since the second edition of 1978 our knowledge of Victorian painting has increased dramatically. There has been a flood of books articles exhibitions and catalogues. Artists have emerged from obscurity; long-lost pictures have come to light; artists' descendants have come forward with vital information. I have done my utmost to leave no stone unturned in the search for any new information especially dates of birth and death. Absolutely every fact every reference every scrap of information has been included in order to make this third edition as comprehensive as possible while the black and white illustrations in the second volume-not present here have been increased to some 750 making a greater visual record of this important period than has probably ever appeared before. Great effort has been made once again to up-date the bibliographical entries as much as possible including all new books articles and exhibition catalogues since 1978. Important new books have been listed in the bibliographical reference section at the front of this volume as well as a list of other useful books and catalogues published since 1973. I think I can safely say that no other dictionary has such comprehensive bibliographies of Victorian artists.". "This volume contains over 11000 entries. In addition to those on artists who have not featured before many of the existing entries have been revised and updated. In the case of the 'giants' of Victorian painting the entries take the form of short analytical essays. Every attempt has been made to list all artists recorded during the period 1837- 1901 and the exhaustive research into all available printed sources including saleroom and dealers' catalogues has meant that where relevant entries include not only details of artists' working lives style and important works but also gallery and exhibition viewings and bibliographic details - indeed this is the only Dictionary of English art to include comprehensive bibliographies on individual artists. " - from the blurb. Very Good in a used torn and partly tape-repaired dustwrapper. Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, first edition, 1995 hardcover
