The first edition of this zoological publication from the voyage of the Herald with descriptions of fossil bones from Eschscholtz Bay. The first part of this work appeared in 1852; in 1854 it was completed and issued with a new titlepage. The lithographs depict all manner of mammalian fossils including full skeletons of the bighorn and musk-bull and detailed illustrations of their parts with skulls spinal bones and more. Also includes three excellent plates featuring lizards and six of various fish. Rare; not in Hill or ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY. <br> <br> "Sir John Richardson was a distinguished British naturalist and arctic explorer. In 1819 he was appointed surgeon and naturalist to Franklin's first arctic expedition and subsequently to the second. The scientific results of these expeditions he described in contributions to Franklin's NARRATIVES. He also wrote the natural history accounts of several other arctic voyages. G Marks from a variety of previous owners; some foxing to select pages; book block must have been rebound once and only 9 of the 12 original plates on pink paper were stitched in as part of that process. Comparing this copy to a scanned one shows that the missing images are of Pietro da Cortona Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck. Three-quarters brown & white paper boards with brown leather corners and spine gilt letters on spine gilt top edges 287 pp. 9 of expected 12 BW plates. Title on spine: Richardson on Painting. A later reprint of essays first written by Jonathan Richardson 1667-1745 in the early 1700s and considered to be the first such writings in English which addressed artistic theory. Enhanced by occasional BW plates of representative artists. A classic. hardcover books

This is an unsophisticated uncut copy of original Strawberry Hill edition of this famous work a great influence on the classical school of painting in England specifically William Hogarth and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Richardson's works were popular in early America and were in the library of Thomas Jefferson. A forgery of this edition was also published in 1792 identified plates portraits of old masters on tinted pink paper and the omission of th binder's instruction for the plates. With a few pencil notations throughout. very scarce book rare in original boards which are heavily rubbed. unknown books

Recent paper label on spine. Front board with gold title lettering and decorative border: "THE UNIVERSAL CODE OF SIGNALS MARRYAT RICHARDSON" also faded but readable. Front flyleaf crudely glued at the gutter first folding plate nearly torn in 2 at the fold repaired with archival tape. Binding still sound noting several signatures a bit "proud". A working man's copy and in it's original "patina'd" state. Front pastedown and endpaper publisher advertisements. Previous owner Haddock & Co St. Thomas stamped in several places another inked name/location on front flyleaf. Chips and creasing to front flyleaf no loss of text. 2 of the plates probably trimmed no apparent loss to content While there are no page numbers each section appears complete with numerical signals progressing page to page in an appropriate manner with no obvious gaps. All sections present per the "General Contents" page. While not aesthetically pleasing as a book the content signaling ship to ship was an important function in the days before other communication systems as evidenced by it's obviously used state. Cloth. This copy is dated 1861. The preface which is for the edition of 1856 notes that the original Inventor of the code of signals the late Captain Marryat produced his last edition in 1841. It further notes that six large Editions have been issued since "each greatly extended and improved". We don't know how many editions if any were produced between that 1856 edition and this 1861 edition. There is no specific edition noted in the book.<br/><br/>A scarce title with only 6 items for this publication date in OCLC not all complete. Richardson & Company unknown books
