A newspaper printed in the style of each historical epoch it pretends to be from. Printed on various luxury papers of various colour which debuted on the occasion of the reconstruction of Old Paris along the Seine for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 old-style calligraphy raised initials and vignettes many authors including Pierre Loti and Anatole France numerous illustrations on wood. Issue two was entirely illustrated by Robida. 1: Gallo-Roman; 2: Merovingian; 3: Carolingian; 4: Saint-Louis; 5: 14th century Tour de Nesle; 6: The Middle Ages in the form of illuminated manuscripts; 7: Rabelais François 1e; 8: Henry IV; 9: Théophraste Renaudot; 10: Molière; 11: The Regency period; 12: Marie-Antoinette; 13: L'Ami du peuple; 14: Bonaparte. The hessian covers are darkened and a little rubbed. There is gilt titles and a red seal with the crest of Paris on it. The remnants of leather ties. Still attractive though. The individual issues are in good clean condition with just a touch of edgewear to a couple of the sheets. 31cm x 23cm. . Première édition. Imprimé sur divers papiers de luxe de différentes couleurs qui débuta à l'occasion de la reconstruction du Vieux Paris le long de la Seine pour l'Exposition universelle de 1900 calligraphie à l'ancienne initiales et vignettes en relief nombreux auteurs dont Pierre Loti et Anatole France nombreuses illustrations sur bois. Le Chat noir was a weekly magazine founded by Rodolphe Salis and Emile Goudeau published from 1882 to 1897 intended to promote the famous cabaret of the same name of which it served as a lasting record. It published texts recited during the performances. The magazine stands as a significant literary and artistic document of the late 19th century reflecting the bohemian spirit and the vibrant Parisian atmosphere of the era. No date c. 1914 7 full-page lithographs by Robida each with tissue guard and 2 leaves 4 pages of text and each housed in a coloured printed card folder. All housed within a portfolio with cloth spine and corners and front board printed in black original ties present. A little general wear and rubbing to the portfolio which is slightly marked otherwise contents and plates in excellent clean condition. The complete series is of 8 lithographs but this portfolio only includes 7 which are Reims Louvain Senlis Malines Arras Termonde and Ypres all cities in France and Belgium destroyed by the Germans in World War I. Each of the fascicles was originally sold separately but it seems that they were also sold later together as a set in this portfolio. A very good colllection. E. Baudelot Hardcover
