1720113801720. 480 by 485mm. 19 by 19 inches. Manuscript map in pen and ink with wash colouring. Highly finished and skilled engineering plan of the siege of the fortress town of Landau in the German Palatinate. Landau passed into French control under the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia 1648 which ended the Thirty Years' War. In 1688 Louis XIV ordered Sébastien Le Prestre marquis de Vauban one of the most brilliant military engineers in history to construct new defences for the town constructed between 1688 and 1691. During the War of the Spanish Succession Landau was besieged and captured four times; changing hands in 1702 1703 and 1704 as the fortunes of war ebbed and flowed. Finally in 1713 the pace was besieged by the French and recaptured remaining in their hands until the end of the war their possession subsequently confirmed in the Treaty of Utrecht. This decorative manuscript plan which highlights the defences of the places as well as the siege works constructed by the besiegers is typical of the high standard of plans created by French military engineers in the eighteenth century. unknown

Title-page a little foxed verso blank Index to portraits 2 pp. followed by 25 thick cards creating 50 slots; all are filled with 47 cartes-de-visite 2 views and one chromolithograph a little foxed. Bound in original blue-green roan over deeply embossed carved boards covers and spine gilt edges dazzlingly gilt and gauffered each board with four porcelain beads two working catches and clasps with luxuriously wrought mounts and two porcelain beads moire pastedowns and endpapers. Minor scuffing to binding extremities. SUPERB CIVIL WAR ERA PHILADELPHIA BINDING THE GILT AND GAUFFERED EDGES GLEAM AMAZINGLY.

The assemblage of the present album may be localized to Minnesota or neighboring Wisconsin owing to the surprising inclusion of two small views by Benjamin Franklin Upton 1818-1910 of the St. Croix River which demarks the two states. One of the images is entitled "Views of the Dells on the St. Croix River" a stereoscopic copy dated 1865 is at the Getty; the other is a log jam downriver from the bridge with a group of loggers posed in the foreground two stereoscopic copies of this scene are view held by NYPL Photography Collection.

While it is not certain that the family who assembled the album are from either Minnesota or Wisconsin it seems self-evident that the St. Croix River was of considerable significance. Was the last name of this family "Quincy" We are perplexed by a third surprising inclusion namely a chromolithograph of a "Quince Blossom" probably not at random. The present album is far more luxurious than Harding's more common and much more inferior "Universal Photograph Album" 1861 and ours is distinguished by its exceptional condition. W.W. Contemporary newspaper clipping affixed to upper left corner with pin. Two photographs 86 by 295mm pasted to verso sun-spotted bleached and toned. Separate sheet with two photographs pasted to front one to verso in same condition. This unique manuscript plan of the Peking Legation Quarter records the positions of the two opposing sides during the most tense conflict of the Boxer Rebellion.

The Yihetaun Movement was a violent uprising in China at the turn of the twentieth century inspired by the proto-nationalist sentiments of United in Righteousness a militant group commonly referred to as 'Boxers'. They condemned the presence of colonial and Christian influences in the country and were incensed by the disruption that had resulted from the growth of foreign powers. Their activities grew increasingly violent throughout the late1890s until against a background of severe drought Boxer rebels converged on Beijing then known as Peking. They marched on the city with the aim of "supporting the Qing government and exterminating the foreigners". In fear of extermination foreigners and Chinese Christians fled to the Legation Quarter the foreign diplomatic centre in the city. Their panic was justified as Empress Cixi sided with the Boxers and issued an imperial decree declaring war on foreign powers.

Combined forces from Japan the United Kingdom America France Russia Germany Italy and Austria-Hungary formed the 'Eight-Nation Alliance' to combat the Chinese attacks. The Boxers responded by besieging the Legation Quarter in the summer of 1900 during which the head of the British diplomatic embassy Claude MacDonald later stated that the 13th July was "the most harassing day". The present plan maps the movements of both sides during this engagement with an annotation explaining that "all north of blue line taken by enemy between 20th June - 10th July". A newspaper clipping attached to the map recounts how the allied forces led by British Lietenant-General Gaselee liberated the Legation Quarter the following month with the British the first to breach the Boxers' siege lines. The rebellion was formally ended in 1901 with the Boxer Protocol a settlement under which China was forced to pay a large indemnity to the foreign powers and accept that "the quarter occupied by the legations shall be considered as one specially reserved for their use and placed under their exclusive control in which Chinese shall not have the right to reside and which may be made defensible".

Included alongside the map are five photographs taken inside the Legation Quarter helping to illustrate what life was like for the British troops stationed in Beijing during the conflict. One shows a tennis court set on the mountainside which is referenced in the account of Wilkinson a student interpreter at the British Legation. He records that "in summer there was tennis on the Legation lawn and in the grounds of the residence of the young European employees of the China Maritime Customs as well as garden parties at the American Legation". Two other photographs capture the Quarter's extensive gardens filled with trees bridges and pavilions. Wilkinson concedes that "it was an attractive place in which to stay. Only the water-tower and the dingy brick power-plant spoilt the pleasant effect of trees and lawns and flowering shrubs. The large extent of the grounds deadened the noise of the city outside as well as attracting various wild birds - crows cuckoos magpies hoopoes woodpeckers and orioles." A further photograph shows a line of Indian soldiers standing to attention in front of their barracks; as part of the British Empire Indian forces played a key role in its military engagements. The final photograph appears to have been taken from a boat leaving or arriving at the U.S. Quarantine Wharf in the port of Tianjin which was the main maritime gateway to Beijing. Tianjin was central in the conflict since the Boxers cut the railway line between the port-city and Beijing in order to completely isolate the latter making it difficult for the Eight-Nation Alliance to coordinate an organised attack.

The picturesque scenes shown in the photographs seem far removed from the very real dangers posed by the rebellion a contrast acutely captured by this intimate and unique collection of contemporary documents.

Conger 'Letters from China with Particular Reference to the Empress Dowager and the Women of China' Chicago 1909; Cranmer-Byng 'The old British Legation at Peking 1860-1959: Based on a Lecture Delivered on 20 August 1962' Journal of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society 1963; Preston 'The Boxer Rebellion' New York: Berkley Books 2000; Thompson 'William Scott Ament and the Boxer Rebellion' Jefferson NC 2009; Wilkinson '"Where Chineses Drive" English Student-Life at Peking. 174317785Paris: I.F. Benard 1743. 252 by 184mm. 10 by 7.25 inches. Prints""Nicolas de Fer Geographie de sa Majeste Nicolas de Fer Engraved portrait. Portrait of Nicolas de Fer 16461720 who was apprenticed to Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx and made his first map at 23. In 1687 his father's printing firm was passed on to Nicolas who rapidly expanded the cartographical side of the business. Perhaps de Fer's greatest work 'L'Atlas curieux' was published from 1700 until 1705 at which point it spanned four volumes and contained 113 maps and views many of which focused on the regions and monuments of France. The entire work can be considered a celebration of the French empire under the reign of King Louis XIV from whom de Fer received a royal privilege in 1703. During de Fer's period as official geographer to the King de Fer continued to produce a great number of impressive maps which eventually won him the even more prestigious post of official geographer to the Pope to which he was appointed in 1720. The portrait served as the frontispiece of 'Les frontieres de France et des Pais Bas' at atlas by de Fer published by I.F. Benard in 1743. It shows de Fer in a high powdered peruke and elaborately flowing robes holding a pen in his left hand. In the oval frame around him his name and official roles are identified while the plinth below reads: """"A server le Public j'ay employé mes jours En habile Geographe j'ay parcouru la terre. Et si par mes travaux j'ay pu le satisfaire Qu'il demande poour moy le Celeste sejour"""". Flanking the plinth are all manner of geographical and astronomical equipment. I.F. Benard, unknown

In simple but elegant frame of 27.0 x 34.0 cm. = Delicately water-coloured images of shells by an unknown artist.
