1894230350Chicago: Wesley Elmore & Benson 1894. Second Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo; vi 214 pages contemporary half morocco stab holes in the gutters suggest that this was originally a paperback printed on acidic paper - with some consequent minor faults; joints cracking. Ex libris a previous owner at Dixon Illinois. .

A fictionalized slave narrative detailing the life of a slave named Paul centering around his love affair with his young white mistress. The narrative is written in the first-person and is introduced by a brief preface by the publisher condemning slavery. The story begins with a short overview of Paul's lineage and childhood and ends with the death of his mistress. Illustrated with 15 block prints lacking the 15th which may have been lost in the re-binding. Preceded by an 1890 edition with 192 pages - apparently without illustrations. The publisher's preface strongly argues that this story is not a fiction. "The eminence which the author has since attained the well-earned successes which have come to him in his life as a freedman . would possibly be the strongest proofs which could be advanced to convince the most skeptical as to the truthfulness of the story disclosing . a character and personality which would reconcile even the most intolerant 'nigger-hater' to the startling yet no unnatural denouement of the story." - p. v. Note: this anonymous publication has been attributed to Charles Chandler. But who was he Note: not in AMERICAN FICTION. Wesley, Elmore & Benson hardcover

81481Paris: 1927. Original silver-gelatin photographic print 7" x 6". Mounted on thin board 13" x 9-3/4" signed "A. Feny" on mount below image see note. Dated in the subject's hand "17/8/27 - Paris" and inscribed: "To the Beloved couple Grover & Nettie hoping you will continue having success and making friends" signed in full. Some abrasion to the mount especially at corners; small flaw to image at upper left corner still Very Good or better.

A lovely jazz-age portrait of Henry Georges Walter playing his trumpet probably in a Paris nightclub around 1927. Walter b.1902 was born in Alabama and studied music in the renowned Harlem studio of Isabel Talafierro-Spiller but seems to have spent most of his performing career in Europe. A brief notice in the Baltimore Afro-American for Oct. 19 1929 advises that Walter "will return to America in October. after being eleven years in Europe;" he was at this time performing with Opal Cooper's "International Five" a popular Paris quintet which also included Samuel Richardson Harvey White and Charlie Lewis. Little else is known of Walter; the 1930 U.S. Census finds him living as a lodger on 151st Street in Harlem with the occupation of "musician" but we find no further record of him after this.

The photograph is titled "A Fény" with an address in Hungarian at left: "Váczi U Vaci Utca 11/B." The title which translates to "The Light" is possibly a reference to the influential Hungarian photographic journal of the same name published in Budapest from 1906-1912. We have been unable to satisfactorily identify the photographer. unknown

19434211New York: Alcoholic Foundation Inc 1943. Very good. 281pp. Original printed wrappers stapled. Moderate toning spotting and edge wear soft central vertical fold throughout. One sentence underlined otherwise clean internally. An early pamphlet issued by Alcoholics Anonymous containing important doctrine from the organization's early years. The first sentence provides the motivation behind the present pamphlet: "The purpose of this booklet is to show how thousands of us who were once hopeless alcoholics have recovered from our malady. We have found a way of life which no longer compels us to drink. Alcoholics Anonymous is the great reality which has expelled our obsession." Later in the introduction the organization dispels any notion of complicated requirements for membership: "The only requirement for A.A. membership is an honest desire to stop drinking." The pamphlet also prints passages entitled "Am I an Alcoholic" "The Doctor's Nightmare" "The European Drinker" "Women Suffer Too" "Bill's Story" "Medicine Religion and Alcoholics Anonymous" "The Twelve Steps" "Our Friends Say" and Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick's review of the famous "Big Book" Alcoholics Anonymous which had been published just four years earlier. Minor rubbing to mount at extremities and verso; print clear and unfaded Very Good or better. Pencil captions on verso identifying the five subjects in the photograph.

An unusual composite photograph possibly created to commemorate the unveiling of Albert Weinhart's monument to the Haymarket Martyrs in Forest Home Cemetery finished in 1893. The image pairs a photograph of the monument with an arrangement of portrait vignettes of the five Chicago anarchists: Louis Lingg Albert Parsons George Engel August Spies and Adolph Fischer who were all convicted and condemned to death Lingg committed suicide in his cell prior to his execution on charges of detonating a bomb in Chicago's Haymarket Square in May of 1886. Despite scant evidence and many irregularities in the trial the death sentences were carried out making martyrs of the five condemned men and marking November 11 1887 forever as a day of solemn remembrance in the American labor movement.

Apparently rare; we can trace no examples of this image at auction or in commerce though with trimmed vestiges of other prints visible at its margins the photograph has the appearance of being a commercially-produced item perhaps hastily created. s.i. unknown
